I found a dslr on craigslist but am weary. I can't afford a new one at the moment, but I also don't want to end up with something that isn't worth it...thoughts??

I wouldn't. I'd buy a older model new one if I could before buying used. I just don't trust it. It could have been dropped, bumped, mal functioning... it's not worth saving a few hundred bucks over. I rather know it's new and under warranty for at least a year.

Sure. I've bought tons of stuff from people on Craigslist. I definitely think it's worth saving a few hundred bucks (!). I would meet the person and have a look at the camera before paying for it.

I got my DSLR and a few lenses off of CL and have had good luck. Make sure you can check the equipment out in person, and if you want to be really fancy you can look up how to get a shutter count from the specific camera you're considering. This is a count of how many photos the camera had taken, and a higher number can indicate that it's getting closer to the end of its useful life. That said, mine saw a lot of use before I got it and it's still going strong. I got it from an art student who was upgrading. One lens came with it, the others I got from random folks and just made sure they were clean, no scratches, had the caps, etc.

I wouldnt. Cameras are very delicate, especially dslr's that I couldnt handle not knowing how it was handled. There are some pretty sweet deals on basic dslr's out there that are pretty affordable.

@PurplePeony: now THAT is high tech talk I'm a novice. At best.

I did. Mine was a fairly new model. It was in great shape, and i saved $250 from the regular price.

If i wanted to buy used, I would go to ebay. I trust ebay more than craigslist

eBay is a safer bet if you're going used. You have a safety net if it's faulty. Check the sellers return policy, rating, and etc. I'd go through an eBay store if possible.

I was going to suggest an ebay store as well. I dont want to discourage you if you found a great deal. If you want something that you can learn on, buying on CL may be a better option then you can decide on an upgrade later on.

I wouldn't because I don't know much about DSLRs.
But if I got my photography friend to buy one off CL, I would do it. He buys and sells his cameras all the time on CL so he would know what to look for.
What are kind of camera are you looking for and what's your price range?
