So I found my dream crib in the correct color about 20 miles away on Craigslist. I fell in love with this crib years ago, so we are for sure getting it, but it retails for $1,000, it's the only furniture we will buy so I feel ok about it. I found it on CL for $450 and have been texting with the gal, and asked her to text a photo to confirm it's currently in their possession she texted back right away. The story is that it's new and she is selling it for her friends that are not having a baby anymore (could be a sad story). If I did opt to buy it I would go with M. We have bought a lot on CL over the years. I would not buy a used carseat but what do y'all think about a secondhand crib?

Is it already assembled? I think my worry would be that if it were assembled and you had to take it apart, you wouldn't be able to figure out how to put it back together.
Or if it were already taken apart, you'd have to just take the leap of faith that they didn't forget to pack everything (e.g. screws, etc.) to put it back together! And I guess you wouldn't be able to check for damage as easily if it were boxed up.
I'd probably go for it though, even with all of that.

I would go for it. Like others have said, check for quality when you get there and base your decision on that! If it's new it should be good.
@sunny: I was gifted a used crib from a family member, and then gifted a new crib from my parents. I never got a chance to put together the used crib, and I ended up giving it away to a friend in need. She text me a while ago asking if we still had "x parts" and I remember giving her everything that I had, which makes me think that the person who gifted it to me didn't give me all the parts. I FELT LIKE SUCH AN ASS!

Yes, especially if it was new and not an older model (since safety regulations have changed over the past few years).

How do you check the quality of a crib? I just talked to my Mom at length and she gave me an enthusiastic yes. It is assembled and comes with the manual.

Is it fixed side? I think one thing you can do, if it is assembled is kind of give it a good "shake." Does it seem stable or does it kind of move around? Does it have all the parts?

We bought our designer crib used off of craigslist. It had a few bite marks but was perfect other than that. I've used/am using it for both of my LOs. We did buy a new mattress though.

I would definitely! I'm actually mad we got our cribs new bc I see them all the time on CL for half the price! But I'm also a CL freak and looooove to get stuff from it!

Side note: Is it crazy sauce that I'm buying a crib at 11 weeks? The store we were going to buy it at recommended ordering it 4 months before we actually need it (so accommodate the manufacturer delay plus a month just in case). That's 2 months away!

We just put together our crib this morning and it was a hand me down. I know the people really well but I also realized that it's sort of hard to destroy a high quality crib. It's solid wood and nothing wobbles or rattles and it certainly isn't going to collapse. So I vote you go with it! And I don't think you're crazy at all! We accepted the crib thinking we were going to TTC in the next few months and we wound up waiting way longer so we have even moved with it!

I haven't read everyone's comment but I want to point out that when you meet this person... PLEASE BRING SOMEONE WITH YOU. Maybe your DH or brother or anyone male. Just to be safe.
We were gifted our crib but one of my husband's co-worker bought a crib in SF while 6 months pregnant and alone to a shady neighborhood and luckily she was okay but afterwards when she got to the neighborhood she was like I really should have bought someone with me but she was on the high of getting her dream crib for a good deal.

Yup! We got our Oeuf Sparrow crib off CL for a great deal. It was basically new. The people said their two year old only slept in a handful of times, as they ended up co sleeping.

I would buy a used cot for sure, but wouldn't use their mattress unless it was still in original packaging and unused. Mattresses aren't terribly expensive to buy so that would be no big deal to me.
