Just for fun. We're considering getting a Subaru but haven't decided whether to get a new or used one. DH likes the Outback. I think it looks too much like a 'mom' car. Old fashioned. I like the look of the Forester better.
What do you think? Subaru Forester or Outback?
(Has to fit 2 car seats comfortably and have plenty of room in the back for strollers and etc.)

Friends of ours have a Forrester & love it! They don't have kids yet but they've used it for a road trip with another couple & plenty of music gigs where they had to bring lots of equipment.

I test drove both and ended up getting the Outback! I did like the Tribeca a lot, especially for 3rd row seat but we live by a small dealership and they didn't carry any and I loved the Outback just fine. TONS of trunk room, seat folds down easily, accommodates two car seats, tons of leg room...I could go on and on!

I wouldn't get a Subaru because I think they all take more expensive gas. I would get a Mitsubishi Outback Sport. I had one for years and it was a great car.

DH has a forester from a few years ago. I like It better than the new version. I like the outback too but they look so big to me!

@matador84: Feel free! DH test drove an Outback that his instructor in PA has and he thinks I'll love it, I just haven't driven one yet. Looking forward to the experience.
@MrsCB: All of our cars already take midgrade. Besides, we're looking at safety, miles per gallon, etc and have decided we like Subaru best. Besides, DH is a mechanic and he hates Mitsubishi. Gotta work around his prejudices.

lol Which makes sense because it was a free hand me down from .... my MOM!
Honestly though, I love it. It's a beast. I feel safe in it and I have room for my LO's infant car seat, my stepsons booster seat and my stepdaughter (who is super tall for age 11) in the back seat! They are a little cramped but they fit! Lot's of room in the back for our big stroller and some groceries.
I went with my mom when she picked out her new 2012 subaru outback. She test drove the forrester too and stuck with the outback. It's sooo nice! I felt cramped in the forrester.

@NaturallyCathy: LOL, I LOVED my Mitsubishi. Never had any significant problems with it. It also has great gas mileage for it's class and the best value in terms of features. But I won't try to convince you ;).
My next choice would be a Toyota Rav4. I guess I'm not a Subaru fan, haha.

we JUST bought the outback and we LOVE it! i really liked the headroom of the forester, but the longer trunk space (it has the same exact storage volume of the forester, just longer and shorter) did it for us. we go to visit our families 2+ hours away almost twice a month, so we needed a car that we could lug all our stuff in!
@MrsCB: our outback takes 87! we have the 2.5 premium.

I looked at an Outback, but I've never driven one. I voted for it though, I have several friends who drive and love them!

@birdofafeather: That's the other thing - we have campground property that's about two hours away and we have to consider comfort and storage capabilities for the long weekends. Glad it's working so well for you!

We just bought a new Outback and I loooove it. Even more than I thought I would. We looked at the Forrester, but it was too boxy looking and we just liked the Outback bett overall. Lots of leg room, storage and fun to drive

I'm not a Subaru fan either, My first choice would be Honda and then Audi

@NaturallyCathy: I had to get used to how big(long) it was at first, but I truly love it. It snows pretty heavily here (in VA) and it drives really well in the snow. Even though it's old (2000) I feel like it will last a good while longer. I'm glad we can cram a 7 year old, 11 year old, 12 week old and two adults in it I was worried we wouldn't all fit!

I have a 09 forester that was purchased new & absolutely love it. It's got plenty of room & I haven't had a single problem w/it *knock on wood* I never test drove the outback so I'm not able to compare the two : )

@cmomma17: We don't get as much snow here in TN but we can get a goodly amount, especially if we decide to travel up to Johnson City or Gatlinburg or somewhere. I'm glad to know it handles well in that though because a lot of vehicles here in TN don't! Lots of little cars off in the road. It's kinda funny

@citymouse: I do too. I also like it's boxy-ness. I don't like the sloping curves of the Outback as much, it's just... old feeling and not a good, classic old. Just... old.

I love my 2011 Forester so, so much! We have the mid-range model, and we bought new because it was next to impossible to find a used one. People don't let these cars go. We looked at the Outback, it was more expensive, a little more power, which we didn't really need, plus I like the Forester look better.
It takes regular fuel, when I was researching these cars, only the Turbos need higher grade gas.
We just drove it through a really bad storm yesterday and were very thankful for the AWD. It handled great!
I can get 30+ mpg highway, and upper 20's city. The a/c is rough on mpg, so it's mid to low 20's in the summer.
