A coworker has a little girl and the grandparents gave her diamond earrings for when she got her ears pierced...Soooo part of me thinks it's a waste of money and part of me thinks it's a nice keepsake...I looked up some online and they're less than $100 usually...
We're piercing H's ears after her 4 mos shots....And I have to be honest- I considered buying them!

Beside my feelings about piercing a baby's ears, I also wouldn't do this. I'd worry too much about losing them, so she's just never wear them. If I was going to spend money on a keepsake I'd spend it on a fun experience or a beautiful book or something more permanent and that she'd use more.

Not as a baby...I just think that's obviously more for the parents (they like seeing expensive things/bling on their baby) rather that the child. I would give my daughter diamond studs as a gift when she's older though (like 16 or 18).

My parents got me small diamond studs for my first pair of earrings. I didn't have them done that young ( I was 7) but they were real diamond.

I would buy my LO diamond earrings as a high school graduation gift, or college graduation gift but probably not when she was a baby or little kid.
Now, my MIL…I can totally see her buying LO diamond earrings!

LO is 18 months and has been wearing her diamond studs since she was about 15 months. Her ears were pierced at just shy oh 12 months. Hers are slightly more than $100 but not much. We did lose one backing at daycare so far. Just make sure the backs fit tight.

i bought my god daughter diamond studs for her christening, they were around $100 and they have screw backs so its near impossible for them to fall out. She's also an april baby so diamond is her birthstone

I'm allergic to nickle, so all jewelry my parents have given me over the years have been gold/white gold and diamonds. I can tell you firsthand, a baby, toddler or kid does not need diamond anything. I have lost so much expensive jewelry, I feel bad for my parents lol
If you like the look, maybe some little cubic zirconia studs? Just in case..

I don't think I would... I had rubies as a baby, and managed to unscrew the back of one and eat the backing and lose the earring 
I think it would be a little nerve wracking to lose a pair that cost you a lot of $.

@grizz: This is my main hesitation...Choking hazard. I'm already learning at just 12 weeks that she is super busy and can get into "trouble" even now, lol... So even though I was excited to do it for cuteness, I'm not as Gung-Ho as before bc of the chance she might get them off and hurt herself!

I will be buying her proper earings when she gets her ears pierced. I don't want crap metal in her skin. If it's in your budget, I say go for it!

If they weren't crazy expensive (<$100), I guess I would (though I wouldn't pierce my baby's ears), basically only because I know how crappy some earrings can be and how miserable they can make your ears.

@prettylizy: Yeah that is part of my interest too...I'd feel better if she had WG instead of nickel or SS...And with the price of gold being so high right now, it's kind of silly to by WG CZ:). Might as well go ahead and do the whole thing for just a little more!

@PrincessBaby: that's what I'm sayin. Might as well at this point. I've spent more than that on a dinner date with DH, so to get a nice metal for her, I'd do it. You could do WG with her birthstone if you don't feel like doing diamonds.

Personally no, not for an infant/toddler. I, as an adult, have lost too many pairs of diamond studs over the years, including those with the screw backs made for younger children.

I didn't have my ears pierced as a baby but I did have diamond jewelry (few different crosses and a bracelet). I don't consider $100 to be all that much money so I guess if I was going to pierce my kids ears that young (which I don't plan on, for the record), I'd probably go for the diamonds at that price. If it was any more, it probably wouldn't be worth it.

At first I thought...ugh....no! Until I read further. It would be a nice keepsake and you could always put them away before she gets to the point where she can take them out herself and give them to her when she is older. I think its a nice idea.

I would for when she's older, but I feel weird about making the decision to pierce her ears without her input. Maybe when she decides she wants them done I'll spring for the diamonds.

I don't know that I personally would but I know a family that bought their 3 year old a ring for her birthday. She really wanted one "like mommy" and her grandmother thought it would be a sweet keepsake so they went for it. It is very tiny with (I think) a ruby and two teeny tiny diamonds. I know they spent less than $200 on it and the little girl adores it and I know it will be a special thing for her. She doesn't wear it daily but she is so excited when she gets to. All of that to say, I vote go for it, it makes more sense than buying junk, if she loses it then that's life but if she doesn't she will have a nice keepsake for her own daughters one day or she could have the diamonds reset as side stones or something.

I wouldn't have a problem buying diamond studs for a baby, but when I was little I had teeny diamond studs get stuck IN my ear when I was sleeping in them. I was like 4 or 5 and still remember my grandma trying to get them out. So for me personally, they'd have to small enough to be baby appropriate, but not so small that they could get into her ears.

i think if you can afford them and are able to get really sturdy ones and she will not be taking them off very often, it would be a nice thing! if you think of them as an heirloom that she can keep for her daughters etc that would be pretty sweet. i guess just being careful not to lose/eat them would be the main thing!

No, but if LO is anything like me, they will need to wear real gold/silver to avoid bad reactions, so any jewelery I buy will have to be of good quality to begin with. That being said, If I don't get diamonds, neither does LO

Oh for sure! We've already looked at some - and the price you said is great! DH really wants LO to have pierced ears from a baby stage so she doesn't fuss with it and won't remember the pain. And he just thinks they're about the cutest thing for little girls (always points them out when he sees them now!)
It was even his idea to want WG and real diamonds! We went to our jeweler for my birthday and they showed us a few, definitely we want to get the screw back type where it's short and rounded, especially for babies.

Yup, I think $100 is more than reasonable. The only reason I won't is b/c (1) we're not piercing LO's ears until she's old enough to want them herself, and (2) choking hazard.

$100 is more than reasonalble IMO. Once LO decides she wants her ears pierced we will buy her a pair.
