Nooooo way for me. It's always so cold on NYE! Once you're there, you can't really leave and pee!

I have a phobia of large crowds, so Times Square on NYE would not work out well for me.

I hate going to Times Square on a regular day so I definitely would never go for New Year's Eve. Being in a crowd of that size is one of my worst nightmares.

No, because of the reasons you listed and because you can't drink. I want to be able to toast in the new year!

No! It does not look like fun at all! I can't even imagine what it's like when you try to leave.

I used to want to when I was younger. Now.. Not so much! Happy ringing in the new year at home!

I did it to ring in 2005. Hubby and I were in the area for a late lunch... on our way back to our apt (just a 15 min walk away), we saw the crowds forming and decided to just stay where we were (right outside the MTV building). We saw a lot of celebs from there. It wasn't that cold that year, luckily. The time went by fast because we were in that total "newly engaged lovey-dovey stage" and I had just moved to NYC to be with him after 1.5 years of being long-distance, so everything was fun as long as we were together
It was an experience of a lifetime... loved the final countdown and confetti falling at midnight as Sinatra's "New York, New York" was playing...
That was a one-time thing though... I happily watch from TV now

@NYCaliMama: i could see myself doing it when i was young and lovey-dovey. definitely a memory of a lifetime! alas i'm old and decrepit now.

no way! packed crowds are not my thing. and would you have to be standing the whole time? that makes it even worse.
blogger / pineapple / 12381 posts
I've done it! It was really fun, but on the way out guys kept grabbing us which was kind of gross. That night we crashed at Marvin Young's house (better known as Young MC). Good and distant memory. This year we were home by 10:30!

I went in the early 2000's. We went to the mtv party inside though so doesnt count. No way id stand outside.

No, but we did Vegas 2 years ago, and it was awesome! We watched the fireworks from our room in Mandalay Bay with a view of the Strip. More than enough for me, no need to do any more big cities.
This year we went to a friend's house and partied with 6 kids/toddlers and headed home by 11.

Nuh-uh! I do not like big crowds. I'm only 5'4", so it freaks me out when I can't see where I am because there's a big crowd all around me.

@NYCaliMama: that is so cool! I can totally see that being a spontaneous, puppy love thing to do.

@NYCaliMama: so sweet!! But where do you pee? I always wondered if restaurants and stuff let you go in a pee? Not that I ever wanted to go, even when I was younger ....

In 2011 my hubby and I celebrated NYE in Times Square. We had a blast. Our hotel was right in the heart of the action, Crowne Plaza. We didn't line up for hours to see the ball drop, instead we bar hopped and came outside in time to see the ball drop. After, we partied at Madame Toussad's wax museum and Snooki hosted that year. Mr. Lemon-Lime loved being able to touch and pose for pics with the celeb wax figures. The actual ball was just a block away from where we stood...so awesome.

Nope. My dad during WW2 and he said that it took over half an hour just to cross the street so he went back to the harbor (was in the navy) and welcomed the new year on his ship.

I've never been but last year my friend had a NYE party and her patio overlooks Times Square, plus it was like 50 degrees outside! So we got to watch the ball drop without being crushed in the crowds! It was pretty awesome, definitely one of my top 'Only in New York' moments...

Ick, no. Times Square is too crowded for me normally, I can't imagine being there on NYE.

@Andrea: @mediagirl: when you're really, really close to the ball, there's pretty much nowhere to go (or you just lose your spot). We were barricaded in the middle of the street surrounded by gates and guards and all stores/restaurants in that area were closed to the public by around 3-4pm anyway. We held our pee that entire time, but not drinking much either. I think I got away with a water bottle that was hidden in the bottom of my purse and a small snack. But yeah, we were high on puppy love!
What I think is crazy too are those people who are in the crowds, and they wait for about 8 hours, but they don't even have a view of the ball at all, simply because they are too far from it or on a cross street with buildings obstructing their view. They're just there to wait around and then cheer when midnight comes around!

couldn't pay me enough money to go anywhere near Times Square (in general, but certainly not on NYE!!!)

No freakin way! DH and I were just talking about this because he grew up in NY and I lived there for a year - even as a "tourist" I wanted nothing to do with it... I hate hate hate cold weather and that many people packed into one space would be so claustrophobic and loud and obnoxious. nopers!!

No way. It's way too cold!! I did do NYE in Sydney one year and it was about 98 deg, and I wouldn't do that again either. Hot or cold, sitting around for 12+ hours is just not all its cracked up to be.
grapefruit / 4817 posts
I'd still love to do it. It would be a once in a lifetime kind of thing, but it's something I've always wished I could do.

Our NYE's are usually low key. We usually stay away from the crowds. Well, we are on a big road trip seeing south west states.
We were planning on stopping in Vegas and during my planning, I saw that we could be there for NYE. So we booked it! It was only about $250 average a night for two nights. Which is a great deal considering NYC starts at $200 on a regular night. I can't imagine spending more than $300 at night for NYE in NYC.
Vegas on NYE was definitely an experience.
We did stay away from the crowds. We saw some youngons partying hard and definitely made us feel old.
If I had a friend who lived in Times Square area where I could safely watch it all, I would do that.
