Non stop flight is 4 hours.
Because I waited so long to book the flight return flights are awful - about 16 hours with long overlays - told DH I don't want to bother as I will be miserable doing that and terrified that someone will rob me while I am sleeping during the 12am-6am layover in Boston! 
Would flight logistics cause to you back out or no?

How long is your trip going to be? For the moment it sounds pretty hellish and not worth it. I mean, you can fly NY-Tokyo in less time than that!

If this is for winter travel I would probably back out unless it was really important to me. Too many layovers get snow delays. That would be awful on top of the already bad sounding schedule.

Yep, depending on what the trip entails, I would not go if it involved a day's worth of layovers and flights.
ETA: I would def go for a week in Aruba!

Wow! Depends on where you're going. I'd probably still go, and I wouldn't worry about being robbed in an airport. Plenty of other travelers in the same situation just trying to get by the night! I've slept in an airport for an 8+ hour layover and did just fine. Just keep your bags between you guys and/or under your legs and your purse in your arms.

@Mamaof2: The Boston airport is usually pretty quiet, especially early in the morning. I don't think you need to be concerned about the safety there.

I'm with @808love I think a lot of the lounges charge $50ish to hang out there. I wonder if the airport you are at has lockers.

I've done lots of weird flights with annoying layovers and I have never been robbed in an airport. It has never even crossed my mind. You will be fine!
Check with your credit card company, you might be entitled to entry into one of the lounges. I know with my husband's card he gets into all of the star alliance lounges for free. It's worth a shot!
I would probably still do the trip. If it was something I wasn't really looking forward to, to begin with then maybe I would back out, but other than that I would just deal with it. I would do it for a week in the sun for sure!

I'd go! I've slept in airports overnight by myself before (as a teenager no less) and was perfectly fine. A week in Aruba sounds awesome!

Hmm I hate flying already & what could be a 4 hour direct flight turned into hours of layover really does not seem fun. Is your time frame and location locked in? I would consider going still but not before I exhaust all other options.

are there no other options for the return trip? Through another gateway city or another airline? I probably wouldn't go... The 16 hr return sounds exhausting.

I feel like I have a low tolerance for this... *after reading the replies* I would definitely not want to deal with a 16 hour return with a toddler. If it was just DH and I maybe but no way jose with any kids in tow.
Can you look for other flights? Maybe more seating will open up later.

I'd still go. I wouldn't worry about being robbed in the airport. I've slept both inside and outside security in several airports around the world, and never had an issue. That was mainly back in my early to mid-twenties when I couldn't afford a lounge pass. I was also traveling by myself. I just made sure to loop arms around my valuables and/or sleep curled up around them. Lounges do make things more comfortable, though, and there are sometimes showers and lockers that you can make use of. I'm not sure what there is in Boston, but it's worth looking into.
ETA: DH and I once did a 12-hr layover in Hong Kong (at night) and the lounge, which had showers, sleeping rooms, and a "free" seated back massage was a godsend! DH gave me his massage, so I got double the time!

i'd still go, but try my damnedest to find another seat on a better flight. alerts, calling airlines, etc.

I would absolutely go. I live almost 4 hours from the nearest major airport, 2 1/2 hours from a "regional" airport. Almost all travel for us ends up being at least 10 hours, usually closer to 12 by the time you add road and air time. And that's just to get to, like, Baltimore. I would do 16 hours in a heartbeat for Aruba. That being said, the 12a-6a layover would kill me and I would absolutely be checking for any possible alternatives between now and then! Everyone's different though, so if you feel it would overshadow the pleasure of the trip, don't do it.
