I saw that, and no, I wouldn't do it, because I'm a wuss about cold weather, and I think I've made LO the same way!!

Huh. Well, I guess if they are wrapped up well enough. I wouldn't be doing it though. Interesting how they don't appear to be worried about baby snatchers either.

I don't think so. I am shivering in our 74 degree house I could only imagine how could LO would be.
The pictures of the prams outside the cafe sure looks odd, but I guess that is a common sight for them!
I had a Swedish prof. I should ask if she did this or her parents did it to her when she grew up in Sweden!

I have friends who lived in Germany for a few years and she taught at an english preschool there. It was the same thing, kids were outside all the time. Strollers parked outside cafe's, babies on front porches or balconies of appartment buildings. She was told there is no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong clothing. It doesn't bother me, it's just their custom.

This doesn't sound too out of line to me, good way to get them acclimated to the weather. I've been known to open bedroom windows at night in the winter.

they do this in denmark too. i wouldn't do it here because kidnapping is actually a risk here, but i don't see anything wrong with keeping the window open for fresh air.

@softcream: yup they do ! I studied abroad in Denmark and I remember being SHOCKED at seeing the strollers left outside with sleeping babies in them. Not because of the cold but because the babies were unattended. But this was never an issue there.
I have been tempted to wheel LO's stroller out to our balcony and leave it there, because he naps so well while outside. But haven't done it yet

I wouldn't do it here. Strangers would either alert the police or worse steal the baby.

That's awesome. I would worry about kidnapping if I was out and about in town but I think fresh and cold air is good for babies!

I would love to let LO sleep outside! I love the idea of giving kids lots of outdoor air time.!

Considering that my husband is from a tropical climate, I can't imagine that going over very well in our house. I think he'd take the baby away if I tried to do that! =)

My mom always talks about this! We take him out in freezing cold weather (bundled) but can't imagine letting him sleep in it! On the other hand... Maybe he'd take a longer than thirty minute nap....

Ha, this is awesome! Goes to show babies are pretty darn adaptable!
The right clothing/preparation makes anything reasonable, I suppose!

I also wonder if kidnapping rates are all that different here and there. It's so sensationalized here that people tend to think its far more common than it really is.

@Crumbs is from Sweden and I believe she's talked about this before. My baby makes some pretty hilarious faces when she's out in the cold for like two seconds. I don't think she would be a fan of this!

I'd be much more worried about kidnapping, or just anything that could happen even accidentally, than the cold. But still, even on a private balcony, I probably wouldn't in the cold, maybe if it was just cool and the baby was bundled.
Then again, my mom has told me about how since I always fell asleep in the car, she would carry me right in to my room and lay me in the crib still bundled up, and open all the windows so I wouldn't overheat.

That's so crazy to think about, and yet it's totally common practice there!

Ha ha, DH is very happy this generated so many responses (I think he secretly wants to join).
I think I might tell this to the next nosey person who tells me off for taking A outside in the cold
