I'm curious to see replies on this. I can see arguments for both sides, but I'm inclined to say yes (for an older child).

Nope. I don't approve of my child saying bad words, I wouldn't approve of her wearing one either.

Not until he was old enough to buy his own clothes and even then I'd limit the places where I'd allow it (not in public with our family, at school, etc)

No. Not appropriate for a kid, I think. I'd have trouble with my high schooler wearing it.

Thanks all!
DH bought this shirt on his last work trip - I was like WTF were you thinking!?! DS loves it because it was made from mud (so the tag says) - I told DS he could wear it around the house but that's it!

Not a fan and probably a no for me for a kid that age especially.
coconut / 8472 posts
No. Not just because of the allusion to profanity, but as a whole it just seems trashy to me. Sorry. But then I tend to dress my kid in very few graphic tees.

Nope. They wouldn't be allowed to swear, so I see no reason for them to wear a shirt with a swear word on it, even if it's censored. The message is the same.

There are plenty of red dirt shirts that don't have anything to do with violence... I'd get him a different one.
coconut / 8279 posts
lol my dad would totally get something like this for my son.
and no, I would not let him wear it - maaaybe to bed
honeydew / 7488 posts
No, not for us... my FIL got my DD a shirt from Berkeley saying something like "hella cool" or something and I was like.. uh sorry we won't be wearing this. Not for a 7 yr old...
pomelo / 5220 posts
Not with the $%*! on it... except maybe to bed. I wouldn't be happy about DH bringing something like that home, even though I get that its just a shirt...

@Mamaof2: Not at 7, no. We plan to be fairly lax about swearing when she's old enough to understand when it's appropriate and when it's not (though we'll limit it to non-sexual and non-abusive to others words, i.e. no f-bombs, no calling someone a b****), but not at 7.

What's a red dirt shirt? Is it a reference to anything? Living under a rock over here.
squash / 13208 posts
@looch: apparently its what makes the shirt red - its soaked in red dirt
grapefruit / 4418 posts
No and I wouldn't go out in public with my husband either if he was wearing it!

@looch: @Mamaof2: Oklahoma is known for their red dirt/clay. It's all we have there. It sucks and it stains!
As for the shirt, I probably wouldn't let him wear it out and about. But since your hubby bought it, like you said, I'd let him wear it as pj or something.
wonderful pear / 26210 posts
@Mamaof2: @Alivoo01: ok, got it.
Yeah, I'd be fine with it. I have seen worse and while I am generally not a fan of clothing with writing on it, this one doesn't bother me.
pomelo / 5607 posts
@Alivoo01: It's all over GA too. I had one of those shirts (not that exact one, obviously) when I lived there as a kid.
pineapple / 12802 posts
This doesn't bother me. I probably wouldn't let him wear it to school but otherwise I would be fine with it.
grapefruit / 4355 posts
No - while I curse more than I should, I don't intend to allow my kids to curse (at least not until they're in their upper teens - if not out of my house and on their own).
@Torchwood: gotta love the GA clay!

If my daughter wanted to wear this I would have no problem with it. Im not sure what red dirt shirt is, but the pretend cuss word doesnt bother me.
wonderful pea / 17279 posts
I'm also in the camp that I'd let him wear the shirt. Perhaps not to school because he may be required to change it, but running errands all day on the weekend would be fine. It's a cool shirt and as a 7 year old he's getting a kick out of the red dirt way more than the faux swear word anyway.
persimmon / 1328 posts
Probably not to school as I wouldn't want him to get in trouble, but aside from that it wouldn't bother me.
pomegranate / 3355 posts
I guess I'm going against the grain here... I would.. I don't see it as overly offensive unless I'm not "getting" it.
ETA: I grew up on a farm and our barn boots were regularly called sh!t kickers...
