I've been thinking about putting DD in a Natural Pageant. She would be 8 months at the time of the pageant I'm looking into. Before having DD I was really against them but now I can see how they could be a fun thing to do with my DD. I'm not interested in anything Glitzy like "Toddlers & Tiaras" just more of a put on a pretty dress and get a cute trophy of crown kind of a thing. What do you think? Would you do pageants with your daughter? Would you do Glitz? I haven't told any family or friends of my plans because they are all so against pageants.

Ehh probably not...I don't really mind the "natural" pageants, but I personally am not interested enough to put in the effort. If LO was older and made the decision that she wanted to do one, I would try it out with her. I would never do a glitz pageant though; I personally feel that the spray tanning, the flippers, the fake hair, etc is not beneficial to kids, and isn't something that I would want my child involved in.

@hilsy85: Agree with you one the "Glitz" pageants. I don't like the idea of putting fake hair, make up, and not age appropriate outfits on my child.

I was put in pageants when I was younger, and don't plan on putting my future daughter in them. However, my mom has mentioned she would put her grandbaby in them. I wouldn't mind it being their grandma/grand daughter thing, but I would definitely have a say in what's okay/appropriate. And if I didn't approve, it wouldn't happen.

At that young, they are being judged just based on looks, and I'm not comfortable with that. If there was a natural pageant when she was older and she expressed interest on her own, I might consider it.

Nope def not. I really don't want my child judged by their looks and think that's OK to judge others like that.

I was in pageants as a kid until I graduated college, and it definitely messed with my head starting at an early age. As soon as I realized what was going on, I was inconsolable if I didn't win even if I got a runner up spot... in my head, it meant I wasn't good enough. I will never put any of our LOs in pageants due to my experiences. I don't hold a grudge against my mom, but it definitely wasn't healthy for me.

@Mrs.B: I do. I was always quiet/wall flower so learning/experiencing the interview process and introduction of being on stage definitely has helped me in the long run. However, like @grizz:, losing was never fun nor easy. You work so hard practicing at home your routines for different outfits and your talent, it's absolutely heartbreaking when you don't win. My mom always said after each of my cry sessions when I lost, we'd quit, yet for some reason, I always got back up and did it again because I wanted to try again. We finally called it quits when I was about 13/14 because it did start getting more "glitzy" and some pageant systems were rigging the outcome to get newcomers to come back. Not cool.

I wouldn't. But even if I wanted to for some reason, my husband would totally freak out.
If they got older and wanted to do it as a teen (like, the local city pageant or something), I would support them I guess. At least at that age, they should have a better concept of winning/losing vs. worth.

I would consider pageants if my older child expressed interest and a pageant was maybe 4th or 5th of a list of extra curricular activities they were already involved in. Also, I would not break the bank on this activity, as I do not believe pageants offer much value.

No. I don’t want to encourage my daughter to participate in activities where she wins/loses based on her looks. People can say what they want about various talents in pageants, but bottom line is kids are being judged based on their looks and certain looks tends to win over others.

Maybe if she wanted to... and it would depend on her motives and why and we'd definitely have a talk about how who she is in her heart is what makes her beautiful... "beauty" is only skin deep so I'd want her to be confident in who she is before allowing her to do something like that.

Nope. I don't like the idea of having my baby judged on her looks. She'll have plenty of experience with that as she grows up.

I personally wouldn't because I don't want my daughter to think her "ranking" in the world is based on her looks or the way she performs. It kills me to see little girls crying because the judge didn't think they were beautiful enough.

Nope. I don't care for them, but we wouldn't be able to afford them anyway - those things are expensive!
ETA: If you and your daughter enjoy it, I don't think it matters what anyone else thinks. If you're both having fun, then more power to you!

If she was asking to try it, yeah, I'd let her give it a shot.

Absolutely not, though if its something she wanted to do as an adult (after turning 18) I'd be supportive. Things like developing poise and confidence, there are lots of other avenues for that.

Nope, not unless she was older and begged me to do them. I would prefer for her to do an activity such as dance or gymnastics (and I know DH would too!)
