No and neither would my SO. Having babies definitely changed how I feel about our pets.

Before baby definitely yes. After baby definitely no. Being here for my daughter is more important. I still love my dog very very much but priorities change.

No. I wouldn't have risked my life for a pet before having a baby and I most definitely wouldn't now. The thought of my child being raised without me there terrifies me and I would never want to put myself at risk unless it was to save a person's life. People are more important than animals in my book.

Not consciously but I'm not promising I wouldn't do something stupid and reckless.... I do love my dogs.....

In my right mind, though, of course - no. I would tear my dogs limb from limb with my own bare hands to protect my child and my husband.

Nope. Not pre baby, not post baby. I actually once got in a heated discussion with one of my college professors on this topic. She was explaining to our class that if her horse and her husband were both in danger she would save her horse first! I was (and still am) horrified by this. I love my dog but to me a human life will always be greater than an animal life.

No. My child, yes... a pet, no. Maybe that's because the only pets we have now are DH's cats and they annoy me

Nope. pre and post baby. I love my dogs, but my life more.

Nope. A pet's life span is only 15+/- years. If they go before that time because I let them get into a life threatening situation, I will live with the consequences of that. I will not put myself in harms way to protect my dog, though.

I haven't seen the movie so I don't know the exact scene you're talking about. I think given time to think it through, I would not (before or after baby). I love my pets dearly but I don't think I could leave my husband or my family for the sake of a pet.

Honestly though, depending on the situation, I may do it without thinking much. Like if he was being attacked by another dog I think my adrenaline would rush in and I would get in the middle to try to save him. Also my husband got mad at me once because our CO detector was going off in the middle of the day and I called the fire department and they told me to get out IMMEDIATELY so I got the dog out but went back in for the cats and spent a good 10 minutes trying to get them out from under the couch (they were scared due to the alarm and hiding) before my husband was on the phone screaming at me to get my ass outside. I think in the moment I might just do what needed to be done and not think that much about the consequences.

@Maysprout: I remember that story! Dad, son, mom all died and the daughter witnessed the whole thing, then the dog came back to the shore.

To answer the question, no, I wouldn't. I love my dogs but I wouldn't risk a human life to save one of theirs.

I don't have kids yet, so I'm sure my feelings could change.
If I was in some hypothetical situation where I had to choose either me dying or my dog dying, I would choose my dog.
But in other situations like if my house was on fire, I might go in after my dog. I don't think I would be thinking clearly in that situation.

I loved the dog I had growing up so much that I probably would have done something reckless and put myself in harm's way without fully thinking through the consequences if she was in danger, and if she was still alive today that would likely remain true. But if it meant risking my life, as much as it would tear me up inside, I would not. There's the issue many have mentioned about your family needing you, but for me the other big thing is what @mediagirl said about the pet's lifespan vs yours.

DH's dog (who now lives with my ILs instead of us)...not so much. Actually, it has happened - a big dog was coming after us, and thank god nothing happened because it's owner caught it in time. But while I did do what I could to get him away from the other dog, I wasn't about to be a human shield for a dog that has bit me, peed all over our house, destroyed things whenever it gets the chance, etc. I know it's not his fault he had an awful background and then little to no training when DH got him before I was in the picture...but still no.
