I voted to wait...that being said, I am notorious for letting things go & never getting them checked out. If you feel like it might be something then I would get it checked out. If you don't feel worried then I wouldn't

is it possible to get a second opinion about whether it needs to be looked at immediately?

I would go get it checked out, better safe than sorry. I'm sure it's nothing and everything will be fine but your health is more important than breastfeeding goals. I am a bit of a worrier since I had my LO though, my honest advice is follow your gut.

I'd wonder why they can't do a biopsy? Seems like that would be a definitive answer and wouldn't require you to wait OR give up breastfeeding.

I voted to get it looked at or at the very least another opinion. A friend of mine found a lump while pregnant with her third child and it was cancer, the pregnancy made it grow much faster than it would have otherwise. She first got an ultrasound then a biopsy, but this was before the baby was born/ breastfeeding, not sure what they would do while BF.

If you had to choose between the two I'd probably get it looked at, but I find it hard to believe that there's nothing they can do about it unless you stop BFing. Can you see a different doctor/specialist?

Ditto Blackbird. All the benefits of breastfeeding mean much less than your girls having their mom around long term. I would get that checked out immediately.

Ok, not to be alarmist, but I now know of two separate individuals who had lumps while breastfeeding where the doctor told the women not to worry about it... and both turned out to be cancer. Both are fine now, but if they had been diagnosed sooner, would have had a much better prognosis and faster treatment cycle.

So again, not to be alarmist, but I would get this looked at right away. It's not worth messing around with your own health, just to be able to breastfeed.

I had a mammogram and breast ultrasound to evaluate a lump while still breastfeeding - I'd get a second opinion on the need to stop BFing in order to have it evaluated. That being said, I would definitely get it checked regardless of whether or not you could continue to BF.

ETA: I live in the same metro area as you, so get a second opinion on whether you need to stop BFing to have an ultrasound and mammogram - you definitely have that option.

I had a breast ultrasound while breastfeeding. I found a lump, and I couldn't remember if it was there before or after I started breastfeeding. I went for an ultrasound, and they said it was just a cyst. It ended up going away once I weaned.

That being said, if you noticed it prior to pregnancy, and it's getting larger I would definitely get it looked at. Especially with family history playing into it.

I'm brca+ so I take breast stuff very seriously . That being said, the type of lump makes a huge difference. I had one while breast feeding (and they can do an ultrasound while bfing - they just don't want to), and had it checked. It pretty much stayed the same and was very dense, but still a bit squishy. The breast sample in the office felt like a pebble, really hard.

I would push for an ultrasound - I wouldn't quit bfing altogether. But I also think you'd probably be fine to wait a few months. Trust your gut.

With a family history I would absolutely stop bfing to get it checked out.

I was prepared to say that some studies (posted in the news so not seen in journals) have shown breastfeeding reduces chances of breast cancer. But you have a family history and I agree with others to get it checked out. Do what you can while breastfeeding but if there is a chance it is cancer, it is better to be treated and with your babies than it is to breastfeed.

@BabyBoecksMom: that's how mine was/is...I just had to jump through some hoops to get an ultrasound while bfing, but they did it...

Coming out of "hiding" just to say that my GYN found a lump at my 6 week post-partum appointment and ordered a mammogram after it didn't go away after another month. It was painful but worth it. It turned out to be just a cyst. I would encourage you to get it checked out no need to stop BF...
