To me, it's a once in a lifetime thing...something some people have waited their whole lives for. I would be a little annoyed by her being late, for sure, but asking off to watch such a big game or go to the parade is a once in a lifetime thing that seems pretty normal/exciting to me.

I'm not a sports fan so I wouldn't. But I wouldn't judge someone who did. Also I don't think it hurts to ask...if you need her, just say no!

Huge Phillies fan here. I also work in the city, and our company was so lenient about us taking off. My husband's company were aholes about it, and he missed the parade. It's just so electric when you're a sports fan and especially when it's been a drought like the Cubbies have had. I think you need to give her the day off. I know you don't understand b/c you're not a big sports fan, but it's a huge deal to a sports fan, and she'll be far more loyal to you and appreciate you more if you do this for her.

Um, the Cubs haven't won a World Series in 108 years. So I absolutely 100% get why she would want to take off. I get that since you're not a huge sports fan, you don't understand this. (This isn't a knock on you at all.) And I totally get why you're annoyed.

Now, obviously I'm also a huge Cubs fan so to me, this whole thing is a BFD. I'm running on little sleep myself and wish I could take off for the parade.

For a sport that I was a huge fan of, yes reasonable to ask off, it just sucks that it's last minute - would have been better if she got a conditional approval that she would take off if they won. I know lots of people who take off work every March for the first days of college basketball March Madness when it's games going on from morning to night.

I absolutely, no questions, would take time off for the parade if I were a Cubs fan. When my city won the Superbowl my office ground to a halt as we all viewed the parade from our windows - that's a little different, but I did decline client requests for meetings during that time. BUT, I'm not a sole caregiver for a young child!! I do think the bar is higher for a nanny unfortunately. It's your call ultimately. Hmm, any chance she could take LO along to the parade? I'm sure there will be a ton of kids there.

@macintosh: Ugh. I hate sport and I hate parades and I'm reeeaaallly irritated for you. Ditching your responsibilities and inconveniencing people because someone hit some balls really well or whatever the hell happened is bad enough, but it's the fact that you are just expected to totally understand - because, y'know, "go cubs" or some shit - that really annoys me.

I wouldn't personally but I'm not into sports. I live in the SF Bay Area and have lots of baseball obsessed friends who took time off work for the parade when the Giants won the World Series. It was a super special occasion for them!

@Cherrybee: Wow. For many people, this represents a tie to relatives who are no longer with us, childhood nostalgia, formative experiences, and pride in our city and team. You don't have to like sports, but it's SO much more than "some shit" to so many people. I'm sorry you're so annoyed by the joy of others.

Personally, I would not take off for this- since I could care less about sports/ baseball. However, I don't judge how people use their time off. Last minute notice is not cool.

I could care less about baseball, but I *loved* the atmosphere when our local team has won the world series. On the night of the final game, it feels like everyone is coming together and there's just so much excitement and energy in the air, random people actually smile and high five you in the street, and everyone is sharing in something together. It's one of the very few times where it feels like everyone is together as a community. I was super bummed to have to miss the parade for work, I didn't complain and didn't ask off because I knew it wouldn't be feasible, but I was sad about it.

I'll preface this by saying I'm a huge Cubs fan, and it's hard for me to be unbiased since it's the Cubs, but....I totally get where both of you are coming from. I would go to that parade in a heartbeat were the parade not 2000 miles away! That being said, since you're being so nice and letting her go, I would certainly hope she understands this is a unique situation and you won't let her off for non-essential stuff in the future. Still... FLY THE W!!!!

When I was 14 and the Blue Jays won the World Series my mom and my best friend's mom called in sick to work, let us skip school, and took us to the parade. It was awesome and 23 years later I remember it vividly

No especially not if I was a nanny! I rarely take off, waste 9 or 10 sick days every year. I can't imagine doing it if it would affect my employer's work as well.

I would be peeved too! I don't think it's unreasonable for her to ask off for a sports event if she really enjoys that sort of thing, but I think it's inappropriate to take a personal day with such short notice (especially if she was late today too!).

Personally, I wouldn't look at the reason why she wants off as the deciding factor. I never tell my boss why I'm taking off, nor does he ask. I see nothing wrong with wanting to celebrate a huge sports event. It's a once in a lifetime thing! But, yeah I don't think it's your place to judge how her husband uses his PTO either. If you need her to work, just say that. If you don't need her but you just don't think she has a good reason for taking off, then let her.

Does she have a set mumber of personal or vacation days she's entitled to? If so, the reason shouldn't matter and she should be able to take it off unless there's a pre-existing reason why you absolutely need her that day. I never have to tell my boss what I'm planning to do on vacation days.
