I think taking the iphone+lens attachment is just fine; esp if you have the option of renting a dslr if/when you choose to use it while you're there~

On our most recent trip to London and Marrakech, DH had his DSLR and I had my iphone, and honestly since I have so much trouble getting his files from him all I ever have are my iphone photos which I'm fine with.

We usually take a small point and shoot, a Canon Powershot. The DSLR and all of the lenses hasn't come on vacation with us since September 2010. It's just too much to carry on the plane with a LO.

Right now, I only take my iphone, but that's because it takes as good pictures as my older, getting crappy digital camera. If I had a DSLR (which is #1 on my Christmas list) I would definitely bring it.
For a major trip to the Philippines, I think I would want some amazing photos.

On a big trip I like taking my DSLR, especially in the Philippines! You'll have some beautiful scenes that will look so much better on the DSLR than the iPhone.

@serendipity: Photojojo has some iphone lens attachments that I've wanted to try, although I've been getting around it by using Camera+ instead of the regular camera app and only shooting in good lighting.

I'd bring at least a point and shoot. I love my Canon Powershot S95. I think the new version is the S100. It's tiny and works so much better than my iPhone both in functionality and picture quality!

no - i would take my dslr AND my small point and shoot... pictures are so precious, i wouldn't want to miss a moment. plus you can't take self-timer shots with your iphone.

I can't go on vacation without my dslr. I take tons of photos, especially when we're with family. I like to make photo books and don't know how the quality would look it I only used iPhone photos.

heck no! i take iphone pics, but for an international trip like that, i would absolutely bring a better camera.

When I took the two kids from NYC to Hawaii, it was an eye-opener as to how different it is to travel with two kids in tow. Just be prepared to not vacation like you did before. For me, this meant not taking as many pics with my SLR as I would've liked.

We did bring it, and I'm glad for the shots I got on there, but some of my better shots were from my iPhone and point & shoot anyway. I'm not sure the SLR was worth bringing.

Although, this might be an option for you... I brought it along with the nifty fifty (50mm 1.8) only... that made it pretty compact... It's not the ideal travel lens, but I wasn't worried about damaging an expensive lens.

In the end, I do think it was nice to *not* shoot from the SLR so much... It freed me up to experience things with the kids instead of concentrating so much on getting good shots.

I just tried iPhone 3S as my vacation camera and I reallllly missed my canon. When you are trying to take a quick pic it's so annoying to unlock, find the camera app, line it all up, etc. The intuitive turn on and snap with a reg camera can not be beat!
