We have a huge coat closet that is in need of organization. DH wants to get custom shelving put in to create more storage space which would be great, but I'm wondering if we should hold off and convert it into a mudroom by taking off the door and adding the built-ins.
Would you do it? We have a laundry room as you walk in from the garage but that's way too cramped for any storage. Or should I just go for the shelving now and get what storage I can out of this?

I probably wouldn't, but I feel like you can never have too many closets.

Where is it located? To me the mudroom would be right off the garage - if you have to walk thru the house to access it then keep it a closet!

I'd consider it, depending on where it is. I think mudrooms can be infinitely useful, and I'm all for repurposing space. Do you have pics?

@Mamaof2: @LovelyPlum: I think that's a really important point...it's by the front door, which might work for a lot of people around here who seem to walk in through the front door (don't get it, they all have garages) but we never use that door.

@looch: Sort of, I guess it also involves less coat storage. The plain old coat/storage closet plan would also involve one wall full of just shelving, whereas the mudroom would be more intentionally pretty.

Our laundry room is right off the garage and is small but I use that as a mudroom - I put hooks on the wall and we have shelving up above the washer/dryer.
I like to be able to grab the kids coats and stuff as we walk out the garage door and not have to bring everything to the front door closet each day

If you need it for storage 100%, then I wouldn't. I don't consider a mudroom to be absolutely essential. However, if you can build a mudroom w/ some storage then that could work!

Ok so I understand why people are saying that if you only use the garage to come in it doesn't make sense, however, with kids, it may make sense.
When my children go out to play and are a disastrous mess, having a mudroom is a huge plus, for them to drop their stuff. School bags, snow clothes, mud clothes, wet clothes, etc. If you could see a future in which your children use the front door, then it may be worth it. If not, then just leave it as a closet.

I agree though, if it isn't where you walk in, it's not worth it.

@spaniellove: if you use the garage for coming in daily and this closet is by the front door then I wouldn't.
For me the purpose of a mudroom is a transitional space between indoor and outdoor. Where you take off your dirty shoes, hang up your coats. A nice area for a bench to put shoes on etc. But if it's not by the entrance you use daily then it's pointless.

Looking at it again, I can see that it would make sense to keep the closet for storage and put some hooks in the laundry room even though it wouldn't be as pretty. It's worked for us to hang our coats in the closet every day but I guess I don't know where I'd keep most of them if I had a mudroom and only a few hooks!
