I hate it when people do that. And then I feel bad for being ungrateful.

I'd say something like...
"Thank you so much for the crotch dangler (you'll probably want to change the wording there). We are so looking forward to bringing baby x home and are now well equipped thanks to your generosity. We can't wait to introduce you to the baby soon.

I would just keep it simple. "Thank you for attending my shower and spending that special time with me and X, in celebration of our upcoming arrival, X. We truly appreciate your generous gift"
... Don't even mention that you'll be returning it for some $$$ to put towards an ergo

I just write them a thank you note like I don't plan on returning the gift. They'll never know!

I would just keep it simple like other pp have said. I wouldn't mention you plan to return it, unless they live super close and would see him in the Ergo often!!

I would write the thank you card like you're keeping it, but return it to put towards the Ergo.

I'm like you though, my thank you cards are ridiculously long!! I had to recruit the hubby since he writes short and sweet ones. Otherwise, it'd take me all month long to write them all.
