Yay. It (both book and DVD) was helpful for us. Not everything worked but it helped to know some pointers we could try.

Nay, was useless for us.
ETA: my baby debunks the theory that the 5s works for ALL babies. Even under the execution of a LC who is a huge harvey karp fan.

Good question! I've only heard positives about it but haven't used it or read/watched it yet. My hospital offers a happiest baby infant care class based on the book but I havent' decided if I will take it.

Yay! It helped us greatly when LO was colicky. The 5 S's are good foundation for normalizing baby sleep. His follow up book was useless to us because we had to do CIO for him to teach self soothing.

I never watched the DVD( it was one of my Netflix disks for over a year) or read the book.

I started the book last night. The first half of the book is pretty useless but the second half is interesting thus far.
honeydew / 7504 posts
Yay! The 5 S's were a lifesaver for us! I just told my sister to try it with their newborn, and it worked for them, too! We would tightly swaddle (1), lay him on his side (2) on our legs and swing (3) our legs back and forth, and turn the white noise app on my phone on really loudly (4). Put him out within 2-3 minutes when he was otherwise inconsolable!

I tried the 5 S's a couple times... was hit/miss. Not sure what's actually *in* the book though.

@runsyellowlites: I tried to read the book..it was effective in putting ME to sleep.
pomelo / 5258 posts
I read the book before LO arrived so I knew the 5S's but we still found the DVD (Amazon instant video) helpful when we were in the thick of it. We didn't exactly have time to re-read a book when the baby was screaming and some of the S's were easier to master after seeing them.
Hopefully you'll have an easy baby and won't need them!

Yay, but I only watched the DVD! You will probably learn lots of that stuff with or without it though, it's everywhere now!

The DVD is helpful! I would skip the book. The shushing, swaddling, and jiggling really worked for us.

I only watched the DVD - borrowed it from the library. It really helped sell me (and DH) on those techniques (5 Ss) and they worked amazingly well for my LO. Really was like a light switch.

Yay, the DVD was fantastic. It was really great to see the technique in practice because I wouldn't have got it quite right just from reading. I didn't bother with the book though.

i got the book, never saw the DVD - was glad to have read it pre-baby -- i did some (not all) of the 5 S's and it definitely helped us out a few times.
i was at least glad that I've been able to share the book with lots of mom friends so I feel like i'm getting my money's worth.
GOLD / wonderful pomegranate / 28905 posts
@grizz: oh I can sell you the book if you want and wouldn't mind burning you the music tracks too. It's a CD of "white noise".
GOLD / wonderful olive / 19030 posts
I read the book, some tips helped some did not, but it was worth the read. I never watched the DVD.

We didn't read the book, but the 5S's are fantastic. They worked really well on our LO>

Used properly it works for almost every family I've recommended it to.
pomelo / 5628 posts
Yay! I never watched the DVD but do the 5 S's.
I'm currently reading the Sleep Book and it's fantastic! Lots of detailed information, plus written in an engaging way. (I'm reading it at 4 months.)

I took the DVD out of the library and watched it. Hopefully some of it helps!

5 s's didn't work for us either! But I haven't actually read the book or watched the DVD.
nectarine / 2280 posts
@regberadaisy: LOL! It worked that way on DH too!
I liked it. Thought it made sense and it was useful.
honeydew / 7488 posts
I agree the DVD is much more useful. We used it a lot in the early days and totally swore by the 5s's
coconut / 8299 posts
From my experience, the 5 S's definitely worked during the newborn stage. But once they became more fully aware, it didn't work at all.
wonderful grape / 20453 posts
YAY to the DVD for about a month! They still work but we don't need them near as often now. DH does the shhhh often still
I used a white noise app on my phone sometimes. It was very loud!
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
It worked for us. Not so much now, still swaddle, but the first month and half only way to get her to sleep.
pear / 1570 posts
YAY to the book and a white noise app! If nothing more, the information about why your baby is the way they are is worth it. I found the 'Fourth Trimester' theory fascinating.

YAY!
was a game changer for us. I had the book, and a friend gave me the DVD, - dvd was way easier to digest and super quick and the husband watched it too. He clamped onto the theories right away and we noticed immediate change!
grapefruit / 4442 posts
it worked maybe 40% of the time for us. DD had really bad collic. I think the DVD was better than reading the book but you can find this info on youtube
pineapple / 12793 posts
We have the DVD. DH loved it, I think because it gave him confidence as a first time dad. We haven't had to use the 5s though. LO is really easy and doesn't cry, but I'm happy to have the skills for #2.
persimmon / 1026 posts
There's a lot more in the book than just the 5 s's that I think is worth the time reading through. I wish my husband read it before our LO was born, I think it would have helped him a lot more in the first few weeks.
hostess / watermelon / 14932 posts
I never read the book or knew there was a DVD! I picked up on the 5 Ss through conversation and general parenting knowledge passed on, and a further google search helped too.
white noise app helped immensely!
pineapple / 12053 posts
YAY! we watched the DVD (DH and i) and it was sooo useful for us for the first 3 months, especially swaddle, white noise and side hold. we watched on netflix and returned the book on the advice of the bees.
