I am firmly in the no nickname camp. My husband loves nicknames. He goes by a shortened name of his birth name. I can't shorten my name and have never had nicknames.
Our lo will be called by her birth name, not a nickname.

I'm not anti-nicknames, but there is no obvious nickname for our baby. So she will go by her full given name.

I'm not a fan of nicknames. My husband goes by a shortened form of his name, but he agrees with me. If this kid is a girl, she will have a 9 letter name and I KNOW people will try to call her by a nickname (the nickname is too cutesy for me). We plan on telling family and friends that we would prefer they use her FULL first name.
If we have a boy, his name will be short, so that won't be an issue.

i think i'm with you in the no nickname camp. i've ruled out lots of names just because i was afraid someone would use the nickname version.

We call LO by her name, but I call her honeybee, baby girl, eggi, etc.

I call my son Mavi (short for Mavrick) but Sienna is Sienna...
My husband LOVES nicknames. He calls both kids all sorts of ridiculous names.
I actually had a no nickname policy when we dated, clearly he won the battle and calls me fart face. (yes how romantic)

We chose a name that is not easily shortened ... and I definitely considered possible nicknames when thinking about names! We do call him "buddy" a lot, though.

I'm a nicknamer. Each of our girls has dozens of nicknames. Cecilia is all kinds of things and Maisie is growing her own fabulous set of nicknames... Just don't call Lala Cee Cee. It is not a viable nickname for her!

We're nickname-a-holics! LO has a bunch already. My BFF joked that she won't know her name for years because it keeps changing.
As an example, my dogs now respond to brown dog and white dog.

I kind of go crazy with nicknames...I never thought I would until I saw my son's cute chubby cheeks for the first time. I think I called him snickerdoodle for quite awhile. Even real nick names, I don't think are that bad either--as long as the full name is distinguished so they can use that in the professional world later on.
I do kind of have a pet peeve of guys who go by nick names that end in "y", most of them seem immature to me. Lol, DH goes by Ken or Kenneth but...he'll always be Kenny in my mind.
cantaloupe / 6730 posts
I love nicknames. Like my cousin, whose name is Elisabeth and is called Lisa. What I don't like is nicknames being the legal name. Like Max instead of Maximillian.

I'm a fan of nicknames and so is the hubby. We're going to pick our future LO's name depending on possible derived nicknames (e.g. Zoey = Zoe or Z).

I have the nickname Nay. My husband is Kenny. Both of the names we picked out have almost half a dozen nicknames built in.

Dh goes by a shorter version of his birth name. I have sometimes do but it is rare and usually only by family. I don't mind if she has nick names. We do that already, though. : )
pineapple / 12526 posts
DH's name is one that is commonly shortened, like someone named Matthew being called Matt. My name has a common nickname, but I always refused to let people call me by it and made people use my full name (which my name is short and is already technically a nickname of another name so... yeah).
LO is Charlotte and there are some people who already call her Charlie. Neither DH nor I do though.

We have nicknames for our kids but their nicknames mostly aren't variations of their names.

I love nicknames! I don't like when nicknames are the legal name so I would just avoid doing that.

I'm not sure yet, I'll have to see her first if a nickname fits. But I do love nicknames!

I don't care one way or another, I call my son by his first full name, or what he calls himself, which is a shortened version of his name. I don't call him the standard nickname, though, but I am sure that will happen when he goes to school.
Neither my name or DH's has an obvious nickname, so we go by our full name. My FIL is Max, not short for anything and it's a big trend around here to name your kid the nickname, like Mike or Kim, not Michael or Kimberly.

I love nicknames...that's a requirement for whatever name we pick--it must easily have a one syllable nickname.
blogger / pomelo / 5361 posts
I have nicknames for virtually every person I love, so I'm sure our little ones will have a plethora of nicknames. I don't just shorten names though. As an example our dog's name is Roxie, but I call her Big Rox, Baby Rox, Baby Snack, Snack Pack, and Baby Beluga. I guess I'm just a nicknamer!
nectarine / 2797 posts
DH goes by a nickname and I go by both my full name and a nickname. We plan on giving our LO a name with several nickname possibilities (Eleanor) and will probably call her Nora most often.

Depends on the name... some are horrid! Because of that, I'm definitely considering the nickname when naming this baby! I'ts either going to be a no nickname name or something where I like the nickname.
GOLD / wonderful olive / 19030 posts
We are actually planning on nicknames for our LO, since we have such a long last name, the shorter the first name the better for when she gets to school!
GOLD / wonderful grape / 20289 posts
We use a nickname for my lo. My name can't be shortened or made into a nickname, but I still like them.

Her nickname is Maddie, but I call her Baby Doll. Came from me trying to soother her after our drive from daycare.
Long as it's not something crazy, nicknames don't bother me.

DH has always gone by the shortened form of his name (Ben) and as a child I used the shortened form of mine (Jess). Now the only people who call me Jess are DH, my sister, my childhood best friend and my mother because it seemed very "young" to me as I got older.
We will probably call Emma "Em" alot because of our families and their propensity for shortening names, but I would fully support her if she made the same choice I did and wanted to be called by her full name later on.

I'm a total nickname person. Both DH and I go by nicknames of our longer names. Even our dog has about 20 different nicknames So, yes, our lo will have nicknames.
pomegranate / 3414 posts
DH goes by a shortened form of his birth name, I go by my birth name. LO goes by her birth name and DH corrects people who try to call her by a nickname. We however have pet names for her but tend to mostly use her given name except in informal written communications when we just refer to her by the first letter of her name (do the same thing with the dog though).

I love nicknames. Probably because I never had one growing up. You can't really make a nickname for my name and I always envied girls who got cool nicknames! My husband and I actually came up with names for our kids that would have cool nicknames.
blogger / wonderful cherry / 21616 posts
I'm a nick-namer.
I loved the name Cobi - which I guess could be nickname or full name, but my husband thought it was too short. So we named him Jacobi, but we always call him Cobi.
We have a million other names for him, little love, buddy, pickle butt, pumpkin head, lovey, Coco, Coco bee, Ja-co-co, little man and the list goes on
GOLD / eggplant / 11517 posts
DH goes by the long version of a name that almost everyone shortens (Bradley - Brad). The name we are throwing around for a girl has a shortened version that we both like and will probably regularly use (Charlotte - Charlie)
wonderful cherry / 21504 posts
@Grace: Nicknames as full names are my name pet peeve. I knew a girl named Jessie once, not Jessica, and for some reason it drove me crazy.
But, I love nick names. I never had one and always wanted one. When we talk baby names we always talk about the nickname options. I think it you truly don't want your kid to be nicknamed, you probably shouldn't give them a name that always is. It reminds me of the friends episode where Rachel tells the gang not to call her crush Josh. "It's Joshua." "What, he doesn't like Josh?" "No, I don't"

i'm big on nicknames. we ruled out names based on their possible nicknames, and we chose our name based on possible nicknames. i think nicknames are endearing!

I have a million nicknames for my kids. They almost never go by their full, real names in my house!
GOLD / wonderful olive / 19030 posts
I guess another point of view, I grew up with a nickname as a "real" name, I hated it!! I used to wish I had the full name just so I dind't have to correct people, most used to just assume my name was Jessica even thought it is just Jessie. Drove me bonkers! (Didn't help Jessica was top 3 the year I was born!)
bananas / 9118 posts
Yes, for fun we do. Especially the pets, their names evolve into something entirely off the wall. Our dog Danny has turned into just G. Short for Danny G, Ghetto dog from when we lived in a less than stellar neighborhood.
I already knew when we picked Cameron, that I would call him Cammy or Cam all the time. Somehow he has also turned into Booh-Bah, I have no idea how!
Other than that, none of our families are big nickname people. I was the only one growing up who had one- Cheska, part of a much longer italian version of my name.
