My 5.5 yr old DS has had a buzz cut for a few years and now wants a Mohawk so he has been growing it out.
I am amazed how when I tell people this they say "OMG your not going to let him are you???"
Umm, yes I am - why not? Its just hair.
My own mother told me "your the mom, you make the choices not him" I just rolled my eyes

My mom used to give me a hard time because I let ds make a lot of choices for himself. Now she says that she sees how good it is for him.

We've said we'll let our kids do fohawks, but not a full out mohawk. They can spike it, but it'll be down for church.

Probably not, because i know if I say yes once, I'll end up having to say yes to more extreme styles.

Yes. I hated when my parents wouldn't allow us to do little things like that when we were kids. I want my kids to be free to express themselves (as long as it is safe).

Hellz yes I'd let my kid get a mohawk! We're actually thinking about giving it to him as his summer cut. Please post a picture when he gets one

I am so indifferent about hair (probably b/c i was never allowed to have mine cut). It's hair. It grows back. It grows out. It's a safe form of expression, IMO.

Heck yeah! My mom always let us pick our hair do, which is why my brother had a Mohawk at 4. I think it's fun.

Safe form of self-expression. I see no issue with it whatsoever! I remember the first time I asked to dye my hair, just for fun, I was 14 and my mom said yes and helped me to it! It was only a few shades darker but I was so excited to do and had so much fun. I'm glad it wasn't a big issue to her.

Of course. Although I've had some pretty "extreme" hair styles over the years...
Hair grows back and if that's how he wants to express himself, I am fine with that.
I was actually thinking about giving him one now... lol, he would have no say whatsoever.

I'm not a fan but I would let him do it. I wouldn't voice that I don't like it either. DH said his mom constantly yelled at him for his long hair and hated that she did that

I love it! The only problem i could think of is if he goes to a conservative school where it would be frowned upon. My husband teaches at an elite private school and a mohawk would not go over so well.

Heck yeah! I hope I have kids who want to explore styles (within reason, of course) and experiment with their looks.
I always had too many rules, and it sucked to KNOW that my parents would say 'No' to just about anything I asked to do.

Heck yes. Even if my daughter asked for one I'd agree. I hated being micromanaged by my mom, and wasn't allowed to pick my own haircut until I was 17. It's just hair!

1) It's cute anyways. But even if it wasn't--
2) Pick your battles. Why battle about something so not important
3) I'm a fan of self expression. Especially the kind that lasts only self months.
4) Being the kind of mom that lets their kid do this sort of stuff sort of takes all the fun out of rebelling. I could always do what I wanted with my hair (up to and including having my mom help me dye it bright pink and blue in high school), wear what I wanted, even got my belly button pierced with my mom's permission when I was a teenager. As a result I had the "cool mom" everyone liked and I had very little of the typical angry-teen-angst that my friends expressed by sneaking out/shoplifting/drinking.

At around the same age, my mom let my brother have one, but only during the summer. However, once we was old enough to make his own decisions, he had one during some of high school too!

my husband's best friend has had a mohawk as long as i've known him probably close to 15 years. I think its fun and would have no problem let my hypothetical son look like "Punkin Jack" (Our friends kid started calling him that when she heard us calling him Punk Rock Jack)

My mom let my brothers do whatever they wanted with their hair during the summer only. They got blond tips one year haha Let him do it, hair grows back!

@MoonMoon: It doesn't matter so much what the hair style is, it's more about the fact that it's a slippery slope. Kids can't always understand why one hair style is okay and the other isn't.
I just don't want to have the conversation with a 5 year old about why a mohawk would be okay while getting his name shaved into the back of his head wouldn't.

My son has had Mohawks off and on since he was an infant and I love them. Most others do too but every now and then we get a side eye. He loves it though. He helps me fix it.

Love mohawks/faux hawks on little boys! I even like when parents do it on little guys that are too young to know the difference. I will totally do that if/when we have a boy.
