I am so thankful all the recommendations. I have never made pasta sauce so it seems very intimidating. I mostly make Asian food so it would be out of my comfort zone. Maybe one day when I feel brave

I get the Whole Foods brand (365) "fat free" sauce and doctor it up with sautéed onions, greens, garlic, ground beef or meatballs, herbs and spices, whatever sounds good at the time. I don't actually care that it's fat-free because the stuff I add usually has fats from the meat and/or olive oil anyway, but I guess it's better that I'm not putting them on top of lots of other fats already in the sauce. Also, it has a super short ingredient list and is great as a base sauce. I don't know if I've ever used it on its own though!

@BunnyDragon: It's not that hard to make your own sauce, but I view that as a different, more involved activity. Jarred sauce is for quick convenient meals (e.g., when I boil up some frozen ravioli!). Homemade sauce is an event.

I'm obsessed with and will only buy Gia Russa (specifically the hot sicilian). The first ingredient is plum tomatoes (not tomato paste). It's delicious.... a little pricey at around ~$6/jar but Publix by me has BOGO deals every few months so I stock up!

@lemondrop: I love this recipe so much!! Ever since I realized how quick it is to make, I've stopped buying store bought sauce. I also like how easier it is to customize with fresh herbs, red pepper flakes, etc.
