I'm moving positions next week into a different department. If you were changing jobs internally, would you buy your current boss (old boss) a gift as a thank you? I'll be in the same office location.

If I moved internally right now, I'm sure there would be a farewell luncheon, so I'd likely gift her a starbucks gc (she loves coffee!) and a ty note for her support

Maybe. How long have you been with your boss? I've been with my boss 8 years in a few months. I would buy him a gift and take him out to lunch, but that's because I have a great working relationship with him. He was floored when I got him a Dunkin' Donuts card with a generous sum on it for his work anniversary. I like and respect him, so thanking him would be big for me.

I did this and no I did not. My old dept. took me for lunch and I said thank you. But I guess it depends on the relationship.

@cascademom: 5 years with this boss. I've been in this department for 7 now. They are taking me out for lunch for sure, and I'm debating giving my team here a gift or wait to give it to them at Christmas time since I'll still be in the same office.
This is going to be so lame but understand where I'm coming from - we work in a business where we're surrounded by men who never clean up after themselves, and always manage to steal cutlery (I'm so serious). So I was thinking, either for farewell or xmas getting the team a cutlery set (fork/knife/spoon) with each of their names engraved on them so these jerks won't steal them.

Actually, I work for the (US) federal govt and we aren't allowed to buy our bosses gifts! I'd just bring your team in some food.

That's not a bad idea. I love to bake so I'll bring them some goodies when I come in for my lunch next week. I will do the utensils for Christmas, which will be easier since engraving costs and arm and a leg lol I can do a couple of them a month leading up to it
