They are the craycray ones here, not you! I always bring something, even if the host tells me not to. When my Mom hosts I don't bring anything because she enforces slave labor once I arrive.

You aren't crazy. It's rude to not offer to bring something! Even if I was told not to bring a dish I would still show up with a bottle of wine.

For me, I would be less than gracious if someone brought an unwelcomed drink, dish or dessert because I have planned out everything. It's one thing to offer and bring what the hosts requests. This year I am working on letting go, but last year my MIL brought a side dish I chose not to serve.

When we have gone to other's home we are asked to bring wine or beer and do so.

We host it with my folks. (I mean we live with them) My in laws come over and always bring something as well as help clean up. My in laws arrive early to help set up dinner and generally stay late I can't imagine just showing up for the meal.

I couldn't imagine not bringing something, or at least offering to bring something. Even when I've been told to just bring myself I bring a bottle or two of wine and/or some good coffee and offer my hands.

@TurtleDoves: yes! especially if the bouquet came in its own vase so the hostess didn't have to stop what she was doing to find a vase, trim the stems and fill the water.

That is totally rude! I would always offer to bring something. A side dish and/or dessert or a bottle of wine or SOMETHING

I always offer to bring something- even if its just an extra dessert or rolls! I think it's extremely rude to never offer.

That is so rude! I would never attend a dinner and ask what I can bring. If the host insists on nothing I at least bring a bottle of wine or chocolates in a gift bag with a thank you note attached. I would never just bring a random dish either...that is just weird.

@TurtleDoves: I raised to only ask if you could bring something if you're attending a potluck. If you wanted to bring something you brought a hostess gift. If you wanted to help you came over early without the kids. In my family/friend groups things have changed with this generation and now I always offer to bring something wherever I go but maybe that's where they are coming from.

I don't think it's necessarily rude not to bring food; my mom does ALL the Thanksgiving cooking, and she wants it that way. She would be put-out if people showed up with sides, rolls, dessert, etc.

We used to always host Thanksgiving for my family and my aunts would each bring a dish or dessert! I think it's rude that your aunts come empty handed..

Def rude! hat is wrong with these people? At least bring a bottle of wine or flowers..

I would never ever show up to someone's house for dinner and bring nothing. Especially not for Thanksgiving! That's just rude.
