People are starting to ask for suggestions what to get K for her 1 year birthday. I was just saying "anything', but since advised that's not a good idea. (i.e. end up with a ton of stuffed animals and junk).
Need some inexpensive ideas to give friends. What are good ideas for 1-2 year range?
We already have a ton of blocks and pajamas. I'm thinking books, but hope we don't get duplicates.

She got a few chunky shape/animal puzzles that she loves (then at 12 months and even more now nearing 15 months).
Other hits were megablocks, shape sorter, baby doll and play bottle (likes to feed her babies), parum-pum drum and instruments set, ride-on car, ball-pit balls, bubble blower...
I also liked getting some more advanced eating/drinking stuff for her like trainer cups, forks, snack cups and the like.

*Diapers. No joke, the Costco thing of Huggies from DH's grandma lasted us nearly a month.
*Baby food pouches. I gave a bunch of these to a mom friend of mine and she loved it.
*My Pal Scout. LO loves hers and we use the lullaby setting every night at bedtime.

@Smurfette: Yeah - most of the items are kind of expensive for most friends. I wouldn't want to suggest anything over $20.
I'm thinking the water/sand table from family if they ask.

@lindseykaye: Do you have links for any of the puzzles your LO likes? I bought her a B.toys one and all she does is try to eat them.

All of our puzzles are Melissa and Doug. I don't have anything to compare them to, but they've held up fine. She has a range of difficulties, but loves them all. Even the harder ones (like the clock shape sorter puzzle) get played with in some way. She's played with her doll and stroller since she was about 14 months. Her favorite doll is a really nice Madame Alexander one, and the stroller is a $10 BRU special. Those things go with us to the grocery store, to the park, to friends houses... Everywhere. "Take Baby? Take stroller?"
I think the first birthday is a good time to get gifts that she'll use for years to come. Right now she's still in the baby play phase which means things have value if they can go in her mouth :). Soon that will be over and she'll start developing an imagination and honing fine motor skills.

Oh, and my LO is a May baby. We got a number of rashguards, sun hats, pool toys, and the like. It was actually really nice to not have to totally stock up on that stuff.

She also has a few Melissa and Doug chunky wooden puzzles (safari animals and shapes) and a chunky wood Micky mouse clubhouse numbers one from somewhere. These are getting more use now closer to 15 months but I am confident she will play with them for a while.

Our favorites were books. I also liked getting new bath toys and bigger towels- practical! Oh, and his most played with toy for his birthday was a wooden peg hammering board. Also, musical instruments get played with daily in our house.

I created a wish list on Amazon of all the books we wanted. We have always requested for books from our friends. Plus the wish list was a great help with not getting duplications of books we already have.

Books are HUGE with my 14-month-old just now. She loves her plastic playfood (I think the textures are fun in her mouth), her music set and my SIL got her a purse that sings when you open itaand has a play phone, bracelet, card and key inside - I love that, ha ha.

At 1, DD was more interested in practicing her walking and exploring. Looking back, I'd ask for toys for car rides/travel and bath toys.

@shopaholic: She started to play with all those things around 10 months (supervised of course) she would take my jewelry and put it on herself. She would also start taking care of her baby around 12 months. Putting baby to bed, feeding, diapering and strolling.

We got a bunch of bigger/toddler toys! A 4 in 1 trike, basketball hoop, motorcycle, etc.
Books are always great, giftcards to your fave stores, pool toys/bath toys are always in need of recycling in my opinion, megablocks, kitchen food/accessories, art supplies, easel, etc.

Good idea! My daughter turned one a couple weeks ago and many people asked in advance for gift suggestions. It took me awhile to come up with a list, but I'm sure glad I did. The majority of my in-laws (who didn't ask) gave her clothes. She now has 25 new outfits! Very sweet of everyone, but I have no clue how she will ever wear them all on top of the other clothes they bought her for Christmas! I wish there was a polite way to tell them to stop the excessive clothes buying.
