I had a lot of fun reading through each of these maps. My favorite was "How do you say 'Bowie?'" My Maryland friends will know the "proper" way.
I also love that this research was done by a NC State Ph. D student.

Loved this! I always say y'all because I loved hearing it when I'd visit family every year in Georgia. A "brew thru"? I've heard of it but never been to one!

The last one really gets me-- how do people not know that Mary/Marry/Merry are all pronounced differently!? Same with Carrie/Kerry and Aaron/Erin!
But yeah these were all definitely true for me. I'm curious now why DH, who grew up in Chicago, calls the fizzy sweet drink soda, not pop.

I just can't believe people actually call it a "water fountain" come on.....it's a bubbler!!

I can't open the maps, but this just further convinces me that there are dialects in the US!

I don't know how to write it out. It's just so obvious (in my head). To wed is MAH-ree, the name is MARE-ee (like a female horse, I guess), and happy is MERR-ee, the sounds like it would in membrane.
Marry and Mary do sound similar to me, but still different enough to differentiate.

These are awesome! I am only about halfway through but the only one I disagree with is the Canadian Been.
Been as in Set
Been as in See
Apparently Canadians said it like Set? Although I think that's an eastern thing which coincides with the map. I'm in the west and I definitely say it "as in See".

I fit in with most of them for the south. I say "puh-cahn" and not "pee-can" like most southerneres do. The devil beating his wife is said in Georgia too but I've always heard it when it's thundering while the sun is shining.
@Foodnerd81: haha I say them all the same way!

@Bao: I think it's like Ben (like the name) versus bean, like... baked beans?

@Foodnerd81: oh that makes more sense, thanks! It's definitely Been like Ben

@Bao: haha I *think* they're trying to say that some people pronounce been like bin, or like Ben (short e), or beeeeeen. haha At least that's how I interpreted it.
