DS1 is waking up once in the MOTN crying and then wants us to read to him. The time will vary - midnight, 2, 4,etc. It is happening almost nightly now. We ask him if anything hurts, does his ear hurt and he says no or doesn't respond. Is this normal? How do you handle these MOTN wake ups? He's still in a crib and I have been thinking of transitioning him to a toddler bed but not sure if that would make things worse. We were also thinking of starting potty training this coming weekend but I am not sure if the middle of the night wake ups are a sign his ear infection is lingering.

My lo is almost 3 and still wakes occasionally. Sometimes i notice it's because her room is a little colder than usual, sometimes it's a cold (she has a stuffy nose right now), sometimes it's just random. She's in a toddler bed so can get up-- sometimes she comes to us but other times she isnt quite awake and stays in bed calling for me to come in. If she stays in bed, I wait a few mins to see if she falls back asleep-- she often does. But otherwise I go in and it can take forever for her to settle back down. I usually won't read but will rock her in the glider, sing, rub her back, etc

@nana87: thanks! I worry that my LO likes to have middle of the night readings and that he'll expect it to become a routine. I think we should move away from the books and just try to calm him down to go back to bed.

@autumnleaves: If he's been sleeping OK otherwise and you can rule out physical issues like an ear infection, it might just be a phase, like something developmental that's rattling them awake and making it harder to settle. FWIW, I wouldn't read at that time, but reinforce that it's nighttime and lights and books are sleeping. I have no issue with staying in the room to cuddle or make them feel comfortable and safe with me nearby, but I try really hard to reinforce the appropriate time for everything to avoid getting into habits.

Our DD went through this, around that time. We moved her to a toddler bed around 2yrs4mos - she did well. Then she was getting up for something almost every night. Dumb crap - can I have a sip of water, will you tuck me in, the fan is scary.
We basically decided she was just luring us to her room (she has a door monkey so she cannot come in to our room and is "locked" in her room). So DH and I decided it was time to break the bad habit. For about a week - if she cried for us we would come but would stand in the doorway (no hugs or anything). We would speak rationally to her. We also would not "come right back" if she started crying again. We just said "ok, your water is there - have a sip" she'd make an excuse for needing to be tucked back in "we'd say no it was bed time and she could tuck her self in...mommy and daddy need sleep too and its not nice to wake them up when you think you need something you can get for yourself" we'd remind her if she cried again right away we would not come back.
We thought after the week we would have to let her CIO - but we didnt. She still wakes in the MOTN and sometimes cries for us - but normally doesnt. I remind her before bed that if she sleeps well she gets a treat in the morning (fruit) - but if she doesnt she gets no treat before school (I will still give her something if she insists she is hungry but nothing in the 'treat' realm).
