@chopsuey: @mrs. bird: I know (!) but I'm afraid I might get stupid stuff like things for the house, if I go with Amazon. With apple, I could put it towards a new ipod or OMG Ipad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I just remembered I could get an Ipad!

I voted Amazon. I would only do Apple if I was already in the market for a new Apple product. $250 there isn't going to really get you anything outright, except a smaller iPod or misc. accessories (that you can probably find on Amazon for less!).
Edit: I didn't know Amazon had Apple stuff. So definitely Amazon!

Amazon! You could still get an ipad from there if that's what you decide you want.

@Mrs. Pen: thanks! I could also choose a $250 Tiffany's gift card but jewelry is not high on my list.
If I go with Amazon, I could get my kitchen aid stand mixer but if I go with Apple, I could get an ipad/or mini.

@bluestriped bee: I was also just thinking... kohls often has really good deals on stand mixers. I bought my 6 qt KitchenAid Pro there for $350 after tax IIRC. I had to do a $50 rebate and I also got $50 in Kohls cash as well, so it was like spending $300 and getting some Kohls cash which I used on a slow cooker. I've seen deals on the smaller 4.5 qt or 5 qt as low as $150-200 as well. Just something to keep in mind!

Amazon hands down. I don't own anything Apple and don't plan on starting to.

My initial thought was Amazon because of the variety but then I might have a hard time spending it on myself. With Apple, I would HAVE to spend it on myself!

Sorry guys! I'm going go completely against the grain and get an Apple gift card. I decided I want an ipad mini and by the time I get the gift card, it will be close to September 10 when apple will announce their new products. Maybe an ipad mini with retina screen? The other idea is to finally (never done it before) be able to personalize my ipad, which I can do for free at apple.com. (Since its a work gift, I can put an inspiration work related quote on it?) Also apple does free shipping. Lastly, if I get impatient, I can go to my mall and pick up an ipad mini from the apple store.
ETA- Just saw that Apple is doing a back to school deal where you get a $50 apple gift card if you buy ipad for college. I'm in graduate school so that's a win!!!

@LindsayInNY: Exactly! I buy so many things from Amazon, too, but to buy something from Apple is so exciting and different.
I do have things on my amazon wish list but its things like kitchen appliances. For me, not as exciting as ipad mini which I was going to get myself whenever I do get pregnant. It's an early mommy gift for me!
Also, I got a $75 amazon gift card for my bday one year and I had such a hard time deciding what to get. It was so hard deciding between what we need versus what I want. I ended up getting a kindle but it took me at least a week to decide that.

@sunny: oh, great tip on buying the kitchenaid mixer at Kohls. Great idea.
