Anyone else interested? I remember seeing this on HB years back and since we're just months away from moving I'd love to purge, purge, purge.

@ALV91711: @Cherrybee: good questions haha! I'm looking it up now, but I believe it's a combo of both donating and trashing. I'm hunting for a link now. I see that it's often 40 of 40 as well...

This is from last year but yeah..

We SO need to do this. But I already feel intimidated by trying to keep it up for 40 days!

Does it have to be a bag per day? Or just 40 bags total?
I've got about seven bags that I've filled in the last two days!

@Mrs. Oatmeal: I'm thinking it just has to add up at the end.. I've got bags waiting to go to goodwill as well and am hoping front loading some bags will make up for the busy days I just can't get to organizing!

@knittylady: I'm getting into such a decluttering frenzy! Love it!

Seems totally feasible to get rid of 30 bags of "stuff" this month. I'm in.
I like the idea of decluttering and my house has needed it for a while. This will be the motivation I need.
cantaloupe / 6146 posts
@Mrs. Oatmeal: the article says one "area" to declutter per day, can be 40, or 12, or 73 1/2 bags in the end. Worth the read, I like the "non stuff" declutter page, too.

We are in. Today's contribution was unpacking the new umbrella stronger and putting the two old ones in the car to be donated, plus throwing away a bunch of leftover Christmas wrap and packaging stuff.

Right, I've made a list of 40 places in my house to work through and declutter. They're super small - each drawer of the dresser is one place - and I haven't committed to every doing every part of the garage, just my craft stuff and a few specific boxes (baby stuff etc). We moved house recently and cleared a lot of clutter then, so it will be interesting to see how much I need to get rid of!

We already have a huge box and small box of donate items in our master, they have been sitting forever, going to start with actually getting rid of them. Then start with a declutter and clean of the master bedroom and closet. Then the pantry and then go through what we haven't unpacked from moving two years ago, I bet there is a lot there to get rid of.
@Cherrybee: I like that you've made a list of each area to go through, that is smart.

Totally on board for this as I have bags sitting, waiting (for months) to go to Goodwill! And I really want to declutter my home this year, it's starting to feel claustrophobic in here.
Tip for the American bees: when you donate to any charity location (Goodwill, SA, homeless shelter, etc.) get a receipt. If you itemize your taxes, the IRS has pretty generous donation valuations and over the course of a year regular giving really adds up into tax savings next April!

@pastemoo: haha I didn't see the article! Makes sense now!
Today I am 'decluttering' my computer and phone, plus the kids too-small clothes. Yesterday I did K's play kitchen, my underwear/socks/tank top drawers, and the kitchen junk drawer!

My first bag! (Not counting what's in the basement) a filled bag for thredup.com to go out with today's mail!

Definitely on board with this! Can't start until the 5th but already had a goal of purging one box from storage a week so this will be added incentive.

@catomd00: yes I think I could get a full bag just from his side of the closet. Which, btw, takes up 3/4 of the space.
papaya / 10570 posts
@catomd00: @knittylady: Same! I go through mine frequently but he rarely purges his and his side is bulging!

I'm so in! I'll start on Monday we might be downsizing in house in a few years and I would love to be on top of the clutter!

I'm definitely in! I feel like we are drowning in stuff and I hate it! DH will be my biggest challenge but generally if I do enough of my own stuff while he is around he will get interested in at least doing a bit!
Did 4 bags to donate and 1 bag to trash today! Feels like a good start!
pomelo / 5621 posts
Did the pantry today. Half a box to donate, lots of recycling and some garbage. Plus now it is organized. It is crazy what we threw in the pantry randomly this last year.
Tomorrow the master closet...

I tackled the first of my 40 areas today - the 0-3 baby clothes and baby toys boxes. This led us to purge loads more from the garage - old picture frames, table linen, board games. We have one box and one bin bag to go to the charity shop, plus a load of stuff to go to the tip. I didn't get rid of much from the baby boxes because I sorted them before we moved house (donated 5 bin bags to friends) but I did get rid of some, and the rest has been washed, ironed and put away!

Area 2 complete! E's wardrobe. I have put a few bits in the donate bag, a few bits into storage for #2 and changed her baby coat hangers for bigger ones!
nectarine / 2018 posts
8 bags done and I am really wishing I started with smaller bags! Not sure I will get to 40 if I keep using large trash bags unless I empty my whole place!
pomegranate / 3858 posts
I got rid of two trash bags of expired stuff from the pantry today!
papaya / 10570 posts
@tinyperson: Woah! That's incredible!
@catgirl: Go girl! I'm not going to 40 bags specifically (because we recently moved house so we naturally decluttered then). I'm going for 40 areas of the house (and a drawer totally classes as one area!).
I just finished 3 more areas - E's chest of 3 drawers. I've half filled a bin liner though! I need to buy some new socks now to replace the old ones I've binned!
pomegranate / 3858 posts
@Cherrybee: or really sad that we had so much expired food to throw out (like 4 boxes of instant oatmeal...oops!) But I'm glad to have cleared everything out. Sounds like you're on a mission! Keep up the momentum!
nectarine / 2018 posts
@Cherrybee: That might be a better approach at this point! I'm going to make a list of areas to address and go from there.
papaya / 10570 posts
How's everyone getting on? Still going strong?
Progress has slowed down here, I must admit, but some has, been made. We cleared out both cars earlier this week and I have made a start on the kitchen junk drawer. I need to ramp it up again!
blogger / honeydew / 7081 posts
We did the garage this weekend, which was honestly about 10 bags worth! I'm taking a big load of kids clothes to the consignment shop tomorrow too- the more I declutter, the more I want to!
pomegranate / 3212 posts
I meant to update last week whe. I took 8 motherloving bags to Salvation Army! I felt like a rockstar. The man receiving the bags at the docks was not matching my enthusiasm. Sigh.
Also two bags of trash, one bag of food pantry donations, and one bag to a consignment shop (had to say goodbye to formal dresses of yestersize) so I'm at 13 I believe.

@Mrs. Oatmeal: Wow, well done!
@knittylady: Fantastic job!!
We did the kitchen today. We are having a new kitchen installed, starting on Monday so we had to empty all cupboards and drawers anyway, but we threw away so much stuff. I then cleared out our linen drawers and took three bags to the charity shop!! Then, tonight, we went through some old CDs we had stored in boxes in the garage - we are 1/4 the way through, threw loads and have put 48 into wallet storage. It will save so much space and might mean we will actually listen to them - I mean, who goes to the garage to find a CD?!
21/40 areas complete!
papaya / 10570 posts
Oh... and I also have a confession to make about how obsessed I've become about this. My inlaws came round today (to help DH move the fridge) and they brought an old, pink, padded coat hanger with them. Apparently, they were clearing out old stuff and thought E might like it. They gave it to E and said "here, for your pretty dresses". Well.... I burst into tears. Cringe. I'm hormonal and ridiculous..... and felt, in that moment, that I was working so hard to cleanse my life of clutter and they were just marching it back in. So embarrassing.

How did everyone do?
I feel like we got rid of so much. I didn't count how much we threw out or recycled. But we did have 3 large boxes (car seat size) and 7 regular boxes stuffed full that we donated.
And there are a couple areas I haven't gotten too yet, so there will be more to get rid of this month.

@Cherrybee: hugs. I've felt like that at times too. It helps me to remember we can enjoy the gift but we aren't expected to keep it forever. Use it or play with it for a bit and then pass it on

@ALV91711: we haven't been super organized about this, but are still getting rid of stuff. I definitely feel that this has been a good motivation.
