We didn't have a party (just dinner with family). I decided on princesses a few months before. She loved.

I waited until about 3 weeks before his birthday to ask him. He had said various themes before but that was close enough that he didn't change his mind.

She wasn't super firm on her party theme at 3 years old so I just picked something that she liked and would not likely dislike by the time party day arrived (Mickey and friends).

I'm -right- in the middle of this. And I have a month. At first I was going to do a Thomas themed party (a gimme since he loves trains so very very much and Percy is his main squeeze). Then I thought of doing a construction theme. Very cool, easier and less character themed. Then it morphed into a transportation theme - only for Mr. Bear to point something out to me.

With Christmas just this past week, our son received an over abundance of cars, trains, car carriers, etc. And not a lot else. Everyone zoned in on what he loved but didn't get him things that he kinda needs at this age. More books and more puzzles, things that challenge and grow. DS will often initiate someone into our home by bringing them 10-20 books and sitting on their lap as they read to him. So instead of 'advertising' what we don't need more of - trains, cars, airplanes, etc - why not use the party's theme for things we'd like more of? Books, puzzles, games and the likes?

So now I'm trying to pull together a story book/ alphabet themed birthday party that I think DS will really enjoy. I'll incorporate books he loves, books I remember loving as a kid, and use things we already have around the house as decorations .

@regberadaisy: Yeah, I think we've gone slightly more towards Mickey now... but Im not throwing a Mickey party. Ugh. I hate that stupid show. lol

I saw this adorable George party, so I think this is our inspiration. I was also considering just doing a "book" theme in general.

His party is THIS Friday. I was all set on a monster theme - he loves Monsters Inc, but I was going to do a general monster theme and I'm just not going to anymore. We are going to the park and doing pizza, sandwiches, chips, apples and let the park do the entertaining.
I am so burnt out from Christmas and we are getting RSVPs in slow, so I'm just over it. All he cares about is blowing out candles.

I can't believe all your kids are already 3/almost 3. man. do I sound like a wacky old relative saying I remember when they were born?!

We decided on a Peppa Pig theme for DD's 3rd a couple months in advance. I just kept asking if she was excited to see her Peppa cake and kept the decorations a surprise and she stayed interested.

We planned a party with minimal themes and told LO she could pick the kind of party, as in what was on plates, cups, napkins, piñata, when it got closer. We talked about frozen, hello kitty, Minnie Mouse etc. she ended up fixating on frozen (which she never saw but class mates are obsessed with) and we ordered everything the week prior from Amazon. The party was at the park and the invites were just from shutterfly saying come play with us at the park and eat pizza and cupcakes so we didn't really need to commit to a theme before that.

We just had her second birthday a few weeks ago but DH has already said that he wants to do a tea party theme. She likes tea parties now, and playing with her kitchen, so hopefully she'll be a fan 11 months from now!
