I just accepted a teaching position for 3rd grade (my first year teaching!), yay!
It has been a longgggggg time since I was in 3rd grade and while I wait to receive the curriculum I was curious if anyone has tips and tricks to share.
TIA!

Congrats!
I am a parent of a kid that just finished 3rd grade.
It was a great year for him - he started off a little rough but matured A LOT this year!
His favorite project was studying about his heritage and then they had a diversity day where everyone brought in a snack from their background and had to talk about it then share with the class. His teacher also did 2 pizza parties - which they loved of course!..
Throughout the year she gave out golden tickets and then on the last day of school she pulled out all of these prizes and the kids cashed in their golden tickets - she said the kids were very kind and if they only used a few they offered them to other kids to use.

@Mamaof2: thank you!
Ohhh I like these ideas! Especially the golden tickets! I can tie in Charlie and the chocolate factory as one of our books. Thank you so much!

I’ve taught 3rd grade for 12 years and absolutely love it. I think it’s the perfect mix of young enough to still love school and independent enough that you can start doing really cool projects.
This goes for all grades, but management is key. If you have not read the first 100 days of school book or the first 6 weeks of school book, I highly recommend both!
Make sure to still incorporate read aloud. Kids love being read to at all ages and it’s a great way to spark their interest in a series or new author. Some of my very favorite read alouds: Sideways Stories from Wayside School, The Witches, The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane, Holes, and Tales of a 4th Grade Nothing.
I’m also a big fan of incorporating growth mindset lessons into the year. I think it’s such an important way of thinking to develop.
If I think of anything else, I will let you know! Good luck!!

@bloved: ohh thanks for the book recommendations for me! I’m going to look into both. I feel so lost in the sauce.
I also love the books to recommendated for the kids. I totally forgot about Holes. Can I ask when you got your curriculum to follow? I know I just got hire. Only been one day since I accepted the offer but I’m soooo anxious to get a head start on things.

@bloved: are these the books by Wong? I have one called The First Days of School but am not sure if that’s the same.

@Eminthevalley: the one is...you are right, it is called the first days of school (not first 100 days).
The other book is a responsive classroom book: https://m.barnesandnoble.com/w/first-six-weeks-of-school-responsive-classroom/1124232409
Another book I just read this year and loved it Mathematical Mindsets by Jo Boaler. It changed the way I run my math workshop!
@bubblegum: everything in my district is on Google Drive so it is shared through there from our curriculum supervisor. I think if you are anxious to look through it, you could always email your principal and ask how you would get acess. I am sure they would love that you are eager to start!

@bloved: should I email her ASAP?! We jut spoke yesterday when I accepted the offer and she said she was getting copies of the keys for me. Should I give her at least until Monday because of the holiday to ask about the curriculum?
