I'm 33 weeks along and at my 32 week appt the dr said baby was head down and her butt was just under my sternum and i would feel her kick up near my ribs. All of a sudden today i've been feeling BIG movements and in different places. Could she have flipped again? or may be sideways? how can i tell? This is not very comfortable. At what point do I become concerned about breech position for birth?

Well, I don't know what the chances are that they would turn back around after their head is down, but you'll probably find out at your next appointment. I wouldn't worry about it too much yet!
I heard you can tell the difference between head and butt by putting some pressure on it. If it's the butt, it'll move. If it's the head, it won't!

Until baby's head is fixed, they could flip around in there! Our little girl rotated sides up until 38 weeks or so. I only knew because my midwife showed me what to feel for.
My MW wasnt concerned about checking position until 36-37 weeks. Still lots of time for baby to flip! -
My doctor wouldn't even check position until 36 weeks since she said the baby can move a lot up until then.

The doctor checked baby's position at my 32 week appointment but I know she turns and changes positions almost daily (now 34 weeks). The doctor isn't concerned just yet.

@Chillybear: My LO flipped several times after 30 weeks . . . by 38 weeks (when I was induced), she was head down, but sunny side up. Hellloooo back labor!

My midwife showed me what to feel for generally, but mostly I could feel butt and back (back was a nice smooth part, while the other side was more lumpy). She definitely moved side to side in there but was head down for several weeks before the big day.

I could feel hiccups on my hip, so I knew that she was head down.

@sarac: that was my indicator too. When I felt hiccups in my butt (lovely) I knew she had gone head down.

LO was breech and I knew it VERY early in my third trimester.. All of her kicks were against my cervix and she loved pushing her head up. Toward the end you could SEE her head bulging at the top of my belly..

If you have a doppler or stethoscope that can help you tell depending on where you find the heartbeat. I can usually find baby's back at some point during the day, it's long hard and smooth and she kicks up around my belly button, sometimes over it sometimes to the side but it's all around there, right now she's got a foot 2 inches directly above my belly button. It's a small hard thing that kicks back when poked enough times.

@Bookish: I didn't realize that it what it meant until sort of late, but next time, it'll be reassuring.

I judged by the hiccups, too. And also where the kicks were. He moved around a lot, side to side, but I think he stayed pretty much head-down the whole time.

I can tell she's on the right. My chiropractor checks her position at every appointment, and the difference in the sides of my belly are very distinct. There is a lot of solid on the right and it's squishy on the left.

I could very easily feel his butt poking out from under my ribs. Kicks and hiccups helped too.
