My DS is short so he used the balance bike closer to age 4 - he loves it and zips around on it -

You can find trikes at a lot of those consignment sales, we actually have two and they're great.

My little guy has been using his balance bike since he was 18 months old and he is teeny. He is almost 3 but just moved into 24 month clothes. I swear by the balance bike. He just zooms around town in it. I wish I could post pictures. As for a trike even at 3 he is too small to reach and use the medals so he just scoots it like the balance bike.

My DS has a trike at my mom's house and a Strider balance bike. He is more interested in the trike but has trouble pedaling. I was hoping he would take to the balance bike more, but we haven't practiced that much on it due to the weather and he gave up pretty quickly the few times we did try. We'll try it again in the spring. The Strider is definitely worth it though. My DD used it and we just passed it down even though she was 4 when she started and he is 2.5. It adjusts to fit both.
