We dealt with this starting at 4 months. (Safe) Co-sleeping is the only thing that kept us sane. Now at almost 9 months we have started sleep training. He has slept 8-10 hrs each night the last week before crying, being fed, and going back for another couple of hours until 6:30-7:00. I really hope he keeps it up! Good luck to you! Not sleeping is sooo tough.

Yes! Right around 4 months. (Actually it was last Christmas when I was home with my parents, as I am now!) And to really rub salt in the wound, it happened after the FIRST night he slept 12 hours straight. What a tease! It was BRUTAL but it only lasted a week or two. He went back to his normal 5am wakeup and then we did sleep training to get him to a normal 6/6:30 am wakeup.
I just remained consistent and without doing much he just stopped waking so much. It was something like this (this isn't exact, but it gives an idea of just how quickly it came and went!):

Bedtime is 7pm, for reference.

Night one: slept 7pm to 5am, back down till 7am (had been doing this a while)
Night 2: slept 7pm to 7am. Yay!
Night 3: woke at midnight, 2am, 4am, 6am
Night 4: woke at 11pm, 1am, 3am, 5am, 7am
Night 5: woke at 10pm, midnight, 2am, 4am, 6am
Night 6 - 9: woke at 9pm, 11pm, 1am, 3am, 5am, 7am
Night 10: woke at midnight, 2am, 4am, 6am
Night 11 - 12: woke at 2am, 5am, 7am
Night 13: woke at 3am, 6am
Night 14: woke at 5am, back down to 7am
Then we started sleep training.

So, as you can see, it was like the crazy newborn switch was flipped for about 2 weeks but it did slowly get better then all of the sudden it was as if it never happened.
We hadn't night-fed for weeks until those wakings. I didn't know what else to do, I started giving small bottles (like 3 oz) at those wakings because nothing else could console him back to sleep and I was miserable. The weaning we did was to get rid of the small bottle we had "regressed" back to.
If you don't mind creating new habits to get through it (rocking, holding for sleep, cosleeping) then by all means do what you have to do! I personally didn't want to create any beyond a small bottle so I still did everything else the same and I was glad that there wasn't much to "break" when he finally got back on track.

Good luck, I know just how brutal it is, especially when you've been getting good sleep and it's suddenly disrupted!

@paigeface: sounds like the 4-month regression that is an absolute, absolute beast. For me it was worse than newborn days because as a newborn I expected it and he would settle back down, but at 4 months he would be up for hours in the middle of the night. The only thing I can really offer is that it SUCKS, you WILL get through it, and be kind to yourself and your baby! FWIW, my son had been STTN prior to the regression and got back to STTN by about 6 months, but it was definitely hard. Hang in there!
