What are must-haves for 4 year olds? DD is turning 4 soon. Her favorite things to do are arts and crafts and playing with her baby dolls.
I guess I just want to make sure I know what is out there because I dislike buying her non-essentials outside of birthday/Christmas/Easter.

My DD turned 4 two weeks before Christmas, these were some of the biggest hits from both events:
a large play tent
a microphone and and stand that plays music through bluetooth
dress up clothes - tutus and capes are her favorite
dollhouse
kidizoom camera
toy cash register
melissa and doug ice cream counter set
headphones for her kindle
games (memory, don't break the ice, clack)
art supplies (stickers, paint markers, coloring/activity books, and lots of paper)

Also, we debated a doll carrier for awhile but DH was convinced she wouldn't wear it. I think it could be fun though!

@catgirl: ack! I totally want to buy a doll ergo! Problem is her babies are huge. They literally wear size newborn and my guess is the carriers fit more like Melissa and Doug's baby jenna.

My DD loves crafts and painting...the top gifts have been a bath bomb making set, water beads and slime making kit.
She also loves lol dolls

@SweetCaroline: We have the doll ergo and it would fit a doll that wears size newborn (I let my girls put some of their old newborn clothes on their babies and they can fit). Here it is on my very short then 2 year old. The baby in there is about the size of the Melissa and Doug one and you can see there is plenty of room for bigger. That’s one of our smaller dolls.
At age 4 it was lots of dress up. I should have gotten magnatiles then (we just got them for the 3 year old for Christmas and my 5 year old loves them too- 4 would have been great).

@SweetCaroline: my older daughter got it when my younger one was born, since I wore the baby all the time. Although often she would wear it to the park then make me hold it and the real baby.

I would say the toys that have gotten the most use in my house over the last year (4-5) are the Schleich animal figurines. My kids are animal-obsessed and those things get played with CONSTANTLY - they go in the tub, they go to the beach, we use the Magnatiles to build them a zoo, they get put into straight lines, they're in constant rotation.
In terms of arts and crafts we're really into Melt Beads right now.

@SweetCaroline: the doll carrier was also a hit this Christmas with 4yo DS! Baby bro is 4 months so he walks around with a potable white noise shushing his doll DW actually made one for him out of an old pair of adult pj pants. We are NOT crafty or into sewing but it turned out awesome! There’s lots of patterns online and she just took a quick look and made her own style to fit him and the Corolle doll he has. Super basic but he loves it. Also an imaginarium marble run set and the doll bed from ikea. We got the kidizoom camera too and he took 300 pics the first day but has kind of forgotten about it.

As mentioned above we love perler beads! We have a pattern book but also just print out patterns online. It’s great for fine motor and also pattern reading (maybe not on her own at 4 but can get there ... my almost 7yo still loves doing these)
Magformers (or similar) have gotten soooo much play at our house. Across all ages. They just got a set that has house pieces like windows and balconies and it’s a big hit.
They love the Bluetooth microphone too! Even adults love that

@bhbee: oh, great idea on the magformers. We have some (magnatiles) and she would get a lot of use out of different shapes,
