My newborn hasn't pooped in 16 hours.... Should I call the Dr or is it normal for him to get backed up a bit. He is EBF. I am probably just being a crazy FTM- but I am worried!

formula fed or bf fed?
LO was half/half when he was first born. I didn't produce enough BF for him.
LO didn't poop for 3 days once and when we asked the doc he said babies that are partly formula fed sometimes poo every 5 days. BF exclusive babies he expects to poo every day.
I hope that helps.

I wouldn't be worried yet. If he goes past 24 hours (being a breastfed baby) I might call the doc.

Oops missed the EBF part of the post ^_^ I agree with @Arden:
Before we called the doc I looked up things online about "making" the baby poo. One worked for us, when you change your LO diapers next take a baby wipe and rub his butt hole, supposely that helps and that did help us. DH looked at me weird when we tried it but hey it worked. Hehe.

The pediatrician in the hospital said he was much more concerned with pee frequency than poop ...

Is he having plenty of wet diapers? I don't think 16 hours is too much cause for concern. If it goes 36 or more I would check it out.

honestly, my doc told me the opposite of a PP - that BF babies poop less cause they get almost everything out of the breastmilk and have less waste. she told me every other or every few days was normal. I'd watch the pee diapers, or if baby seems really uncomfortable/in pain (constipation?).

@sorrycharlie: That's correct. BF babies are very efficient at using everything given to them. I've seen BF babies go several days with out a poop

I posted this- and he literally blew a diaper out about 5 minutes later!! Thanks so much for the info- I know I am being slightly crazy, but I was worried about my little guy! Love that I have his forum to ask questions like this too!!

@cheert16: Glad it all worked out
LO didn't poop for 16 DAYS (not hours), and was EBF and the doctor said up to two weeks is normal but at that 16 day mark she was getting worried. LO was not cranky or uncomfortable, had tons of wet diapers. It was so so odd. So really, a few days to a week (I worry if it's longer), is fine.

We had the same problem at the same age! Pedi said it was normal and not to even bother calling until it had been a week. A WEEK!
Doing "bicycles" and pushing their legs in toward their chest always helps us. Also lightly massaging in little circles underneath their belly buttons.
She'll poop again. I promise.
