What did you do, or will you do, at your 1 year old's birthday party other than eat, visit, do the smash cake thing & open gifts? We are not doing gifts and I'm not sure what else to do to fill the time. We will have a LOT of people so I imagine there will be a lot of mingling. But I'm not sure if we should have some sort of game or activity like older kids' parties? I have thought about making a space for crawlers/toddlers since there will be a few other babies LO's age.

We didn't have any games or anything at DD's first bday. I was worried that people would get bored but everyone seemed fine just mingling and eating. We did open presents but we didn't do a cake smash.

I set up a "music" area, a small ball pit (kiddie pool and balls), and had a small photo booth (we turned these photos into favors). I also had a guessing milestones game and a place to leave notes for my son with prompts. All was done (or not done) at the guests leisure. We had about 30 people (8 babies) at the party. We also did cake and presents. About 1.5 hours total.

We had several (8?) babies around 1 year at LOs party but no activity. Even the older kids didnt seem to mind. The parents didn't know each other so it was a lot of comparing notes. Honestly, so far we've dodged activities at parties (18 months now).

Dd's first birthday is today (!!!) We are having around 36 people (please don't rain....) but only 5 kids so I'm not bothering with any activities. They can have the run of our playroom and play structure outside. I did get them some bigger favours since there were only a few of them.

We had a ball pit, a paddling pool, a bouncy castle and then we put down a huge bit of lining paper on the lawn and let the kids get crazy with paint.

We had a bunch of kids at the party (preschool-K age), so we did gingerbread men decoration and colouring. It was an open house style party, so we didn't need to have too much for the kids, but wanted to have something.

I had sidewalk chalk, bubbles, coloring books, and play doh for the older kids. A friend brought some soccer balls and such over, too. The adults were content to mingle (beer for the win!) and the kids were entertained without specific activities. I got all the stuff at the dollar store and didn't spend more than $10.

We didn't have any lead-activities (like a craft or game) but did have an open play space with some choice toys for toddlers, then a bean bag toss and bubbles outside for any older kids.

We didn't have any planned activities, but had a craft table for kids with coloring books, crayons/markers (washable!!), paints, some little craft sets from dollar store, etc.

We had a big play tent that the kids loved crawling around in. I also brought some crayons/paper for older kids and some puzzles and books. We did a cake smash but didn't open presents. The party itself was about 2 hours long.

Seems like everyone did a variety! I'm getting some GREAT ideas though, so thank you!
Right now I'm thinking we'll do coloring books & crayons, bubbles, sidewalk chalk, etc. for the kiddos and cornhole (if I can find someone to borrow boards from) for the adults & older kids. I also found a neat "guest book" idea online where everyone writes messages on a wooden block set.
@Jess1483: I like your idea of a ball pit - I might do that! Though I could see it getting a bit hairy with the number & different ages of kids.
I just hope the weather is nice!

DS has a play house so some of the kids played with that. We also had a photobooth area with props and a real snow ball fight in the middle of summer. The kids LOVED it! Just wish I had gotten more snow balls for them!
The kids also hung out and played upstairs in the media room away from the adults. That alone seemed entertaining enough since some had iPads.
