Work blocks most advertisements so when people post about what ones are showing I never know what they are talking about because I cant see them - anyway - all of a sudden this has been showing up and its soooo annoying!!!! Does it have to be right in the middle of the posts???? Has this always been here or is this new? Am I the only one who sees it?

It's new, MrBee did a post about it this weekend. It has to do with the mobile layout and generating revenue (or at least that's what I recall).

@Mamaof2: Yup, everyone sees it in the middle now. He was making sure all users (especially mobile users) can see the ads.

Yeah I hate it too. I pretty much stop looking at posts after it bc I always think it's the bottom of the page

I don't mind the ads too much, but when I am on my phone I keep seeing this gross/creepy ad (which of course now I can't replicate to include a photo)... anyone know the one I'm talking about? I would almost pay money not to have to see it again.

I don't think they are a big deal. Most changes have a bit of an adjustment period.

We had increased the number of threads on the page from 30 to 40 when we moved the sidebar ad unit into the middle of the page... which I think helped make it feel like that mid-page ad was at the end of the page! We just moved it back to 30 threads today, which I think will help with that. We're brainstorming other ways we can make it more clear that the page isn't over yet!
@Mrs. Pen: @mrsrain: I'll look for that ad so we can block it. Just went through a bunch of ads and didn't see it, but will browse more tonight! ETA: Just found the ad, and blocked it!

@Mrs. Pen: @mrsrain: I saw that one a few times too and finally reported it. Reporting it removes it right away. Even thinking it right now is making my skin crawl!!!!

@mrbee: So I have been thinking a lot about this, because while I know the need for ads, I find them incredibly annoying in their current form. I think it makes the site much less visually appealing, and they are super distracting to me.
You mentioned modeling NYT with regards to ad placement. I was thinking, though, that a big difference is the size of the ads in relation to the size of the stories. The NYT stories are wider than the title of the posts on the main boards page of HB, so the ads don't stick out so much. If there were a way to make the ads here more wide and skinny, I think I would find them less obtrusive.
Example of what I mean is attached. Anyways, just a suggestion

@LovelyPlum: Yah, I totally agree that wider ads would be better! Unfortunately, those wider ads don't really deliver much revenue... but inspired by the idea, we added some extra color around the ad to give the whole area some more visual heft.
Here's a quick screenshot... curious what you think of the tweak?

@mrbee: I think that is better. It still sticks out a bit, as it is probably 4 times as wide as the post totle, but the extra color makes it way less jarring. I can only speak to my experience, but I find ads most effective when they are slightly more subtle. For example, IG promoted stories and FB promoted stories look more similar to their other posts than they do a lone ad. I have no data to back thos up, just my own thoughts about what kind of thing I am less likely to ignore

@LovelyPlum: Yah, native advertising formats like on IG are the best!! We're not there yet... I really dislike that we have to use more intrusive display ads.
Would love to find a way to use a more native ad format... in the meantime, we'll do our best to keep tweaking the ads to blend in more visually!
