My 3 year old is having her adenoids out tomorrow morning. I've talked to everyone on the planet, read all the things, and I know it's a simple procedure and it should help her chronic sinus and ear infection issues so much (I had the same thing at her age, as did many friends), but here I am the night before and am completely obsessing and falling into the Google hole over her possibly losing her speech (a rare side effect and it resolves by itself most of the time if it happens). I know I need to step away from the Googles, and get it together, God knows I don't want to pass this anxiety on to her, but figured I'd come over and look for some commiseration here

Well, just about everyone in my family had their adenoids out! No problems at all, other than I had a little more bleeding then expected and had to take iron supplements for a few months to prevent anemia. Totally worth it though, it cuts down on being sick so much!
It's easier said then done, but hang in there and remember by this time tomorrow she'll be done with the surgery!

My 2.5 year old had adenoids out last month (and tubes put in). Our biggest problem was we couldn't get her to REST and recover. She'd feel fine, so she'd overdo it, then feel bad, then would be irritable.
Surgery was a breeze. She was cranky coming out of anesthesia, but that is very normal.

You've got this! She will do great, and recovery time will be a breeze. Remember that the ENT does hundreds of these procedures every single month, and that children are super resilient!
Hugs too, because even though I work for an eNT, I still freaked out over Max'a tubes last week

@Bluebonnet: Is your LO in daycare/preschool? My 3-year-old is having a second set of tubes put in and adenoids removed next week. Just wondering how long she'll need to be out of preschool. With her first set of tubes she was only out the day of surgery.

@lawbee11: Yes. The recovery time is longer for adenoids (other LO had tubes and bounced back immediately).
LO was out Friday (surgery) and didn't return until Thursday (but could have possibly returned on Tuesday or Wednesday if she sat still and recovered instead of running around). Check with your ENT - ours said to be prepared to have them out up to a week post surgery. (Of course I don't think I understood that until AFTER surgery)!

My son had them out this summer and I was in your spot exactly, but it was so easy! We were scheduled as a possible overnight stay but we were out of there about 1 hour after the surgery. Later that day, you would never know anything happened- he was literally jumping on the bed! The following two days were a little worse but overall ok. The one advice I have is to keep up with the meds. After being so good the first 3 days, I weaned him off the meds and then it hit him hard when the scabs fell off at days 7-9 (although that might have been the tonsils- he had both done). Anyway- it was SO MUCH BETTER than I thought. Lots of luck to you and your lo!!

Oh I know that stress.... I didn't do well during either of DD's tubes/adenoidectomy but she was a champ. I hate to know they're under anesthesia, but it was pretty quick. HUGS

Thanks everyone, so much! Everything went really well this morning with the surgery. She was pretty cranky coming off anesthesia, I think mostly because she woke up before we got to recovery and she didn't see us, and the bandages used to hold the IV were a jerk to take off. She had some juice at the hospital, and then inhaled a bowl of cereal and half of my husband's waffle. We were advised not to try solids immediately but she was starving so I made her a thin hot cereal (farina, which she loves) and she seemed just fine and perked up really quickly after that. She sounds hoarse, but that's about it so far.
@Lawbee11 - we were told that she can go back to school if she's acting like her usual self. We're keeping her out until Tuesday since Monday is a holiday anyway and I felt better not having her go back immediately after today, and then it's Friday anyway, so if nothing goes awry, that should be enough time on the doc's recommendation.
@bluebonnet I've already had to talk to her about not running and jumping so much LOL. Fingers crossed I can keep her calm and healing for the next few days.
@bloved we actually don't have to take any meds except Tylenol to help with any pain as needed, but that's good to know about the scabs. I heard tonsillectomies are worse because they affect a larger area. Hopefully she won't need to have that done. The adenoids ended up being bigger than the doctor originally calculated, so this was definitely the right move.
