If you do an Advent calendar do you start at Day 1 or Day 24?

We start at Day 1 - the days coordinate with the day of the month - so #24 is opened on Xmas eve

Depends on the calendar for me. I have one that is shaped like a calendar, and it's pretty obvious you should start from 1, but on the melissa and doug tree one we have, we start at 24 and move up. These are the two we have:

@Lahela017: That's funny b/c we do the opposite on the Melissa and Doug one. It never even occurred to me to use it as a countdown to Christmas but that does make sense!

What kind of monster starts at 24?!
We had a Playmobil one last year and you're clearly supposed to start at 1 - Santa was in box 24.

We always do it with the date corresponding but I can see how you’d do it the other way if the calendar wasn’t set up to have the biggest treat on 24. Id probably have a lot of trouble remembering which is next counting down

I have always started at 1 with both chocolate advent calendars and with my hanging one. If something says days til christmas or the like then I would start at 24 and count down but mine are fairly obviously meant to be started at 1 and counting up.

Doing it for the first time this year and I've always assumed we start at day 1...

Growing up, we had a countdown that said x days until Christmas, and you'd turn the dial one slot each day to see how many days were left until the holiday.
We have the Melissa and Doug tree calendar posted above, and I do it the same way. I like the visual of how many days are left until Christmas. Starting at 1, it's too hard to do the math in my head on the fly. So I start at 24 and go up the tree. Plus, ours has a special star to put on top for Christmas day, so it just makes sense to me to do it that way.

This post is blowing my mind!!! Growing up we always counted down. 🤣
I was just thinking how confusing this will be for my 5 year old. I’ll follow the herd and will count starting at 1 this year!

We start at 1. I was going to come say something yesterday and forgot. Then last night we got home to a gift from my sil.... A countdown activity advent calendar.... And it counts down from 24. 🤦♀️

We don't do it but I know for sure you should start on day 1. It should correspond with the days of the month

Like many others, we count DOWN with the Melissa & Doug tree (adding one ornament a day, starting with putting one on the "24" on Dec 1st) so that it can be a visual of # of days left until Christmas.
For our own advent calendar (drawers), we start at 1 to correspond with the day of December. Any calendar we've bought from the store with toys has started at 1.
