Does this exist?
We road trip frequently to visit my family 7ish hours away so a vehicle that has great mileage is a plus. Decent cargo space. Room for me with 2 car seats or I can easily climb back there.
For reference we currently have a 06 Nissan Xterra, no frills we bought used. So we would stay around that same ballpark.

I'd probably look into a Subaru? My dad is a die hard loyal fan!
We have the CRV and love it, though it's probably not THE cheapest nor THE most fuel efficient, but it's up there!

Ooh I'm interested in this! Have been eyeing the Mazda5 but not sure. Truth be told, my Corolla is fine for 2 kids if only 1 is RF but I'd like to keep DD1 RF for an insanely long time and would be more likely to do so if my nose didn't touch the windshield, ha.

We have a CRV and I like it, but there is not room for an adult in the backseat with 2 carseats. Truthfully, we are looking at a minivan for our next car--not glamorous, but practical.

We have a Jetta Wagon TDI (diesel). It gets great MPG, could fit two car seats and the wagon gives lots of storage space. We love it!

Cs godfather has a Subaru Outback that can seat me and DH in the back on either side with C in her car seat in between us comfortably. I'd imagine it would do really well with just 2 car seats. His is a 4 cylinder manual, so he gets great mpg.

What about one of the Ford FlexFuel vehicles? Not hybrid per-se but gas/energy efficient!

@loveisstrange: My friend has a Subaru Outback and I it. She and I hang out a lot and always take her car because we can fit 3 RF kids + all our gear in it.

I LOVE my outback. I have a Chicco keyfit and a britax marathon in the back and I can sit in the middle if I need to. It gets excellent gas mileage and that was important to me. I wanted a larger SUV but didn't want to pay so much in gas. The trunk space is great, we have really loaded it down before with a ton of stuff. My husband is very tall and fits comfortably and I am petite and it works for me too.

@regberadaisy: we are in the same situation and would love something that could even seat 7. My goal is to get at least 18mpg in the city.
The Nissan Pathfinder actually gets that mpg but I haven't seen the new versions in person.

I would have suggested my CRV but it's a compact SUV and not bigger than your Xterra.
I then would have suggested the Mazda CX-9, but like it was said above it's not that good on gas.
From this link, I would look into the Toyata Highlander (or Hybrid), Ford Explorer, Pathfinder Hybrid.
There's some other options, too, in this list. Maybe the Hyundai Santa Fe?

We rented a Ford Explorer last month and we were very surprised how much I liked it. This is coming from a Honda & Toyota owners.
I saw a Pathfinder on the road recently and I really like it. If I were to upgrade from my car, I would definitely consider it.

@bluestriped bee: I've heard a lot of people say that about the Explorer! We inherited my BIL 's old Explorer and that thing was better in gas than our Xterra but still a guzzler. And the back seat was not comfortable, at all. I'm guessing that's all changed!
@matador84: oh duh. I forgot the most important criteria. Must do well in a real winter and have AWD or 4WD!

We have a Toyota Venza as our other car, it has all wheel drive and while we only have one seat in the back, both my father in law and mother in law have sat back there together and they were more than fine. The trunk space is okay, it's not massive. When we boutght the car, we also test drove a Highlander, that might also work.
As far as the hybrid goes, I know there is a tax credit if you get a full electric car, not sure if there is something similar for a hybrid. We have a charging station in our garage, but my husband mostly charges at work, for no cost to him.

Have you considered a Prius V? They are the largest vehicle in the Prius line and have more room in the back than a small SUV! And the back seats fold down when you need to haul something. And the back seats even recline which I think is a rare feature in a car! They get 40+ miles on a gallon of gas.

we have the toyota highlander as one of our cars and it's great on space but it's not that great with gas mileage, if that's one of your needs.
