I've gotten good deals on http://www.bevancouver.com before. Last year they ran some specials where they would give you a $100 Amex gift card on checkin which could be applied towards your room rate.
We stayed at the Sutton Place hotel and it was really nice and in a great location. Parking was rather expensive though.
Don't forget that all 3 of you will need passports to cross the border.
Have fun! Vancouver is super fun and has amaaaaaaaaazing food!

We stayed in Chiliwack BC last time. Saved about $75 a night compared to Vancouver. It's about an 90 minutes from Vancouver.

I've stayed in Squamish which is between whistler and vancouver. We got a beautiful suite with a kitchenette for something ridiculous like $80 a night. I think it was called Executive Suites.

I live just outside Vancouver, so will think on it.
What do you consider affordable, and how far outside of Vancouver proper are you willing to stay to save money?

Thank you all! I am very open to staying off the beaten path so long as its safe and close enough that we can see some of the sights and then drive back in 30 mins or less. Thanks for all the suggestions. We want to keep it under 100 a night for sure. We will probably only stay one night to be honest.

@MrsMccarthy: If you're willing to do Hotwire or Priceline, I bet you could get a hotel < $100 inside Vancouver.
If you want to know the hotel name & read reviews before booking then maybe Richmond, BC might be a good option.

We stayed at Lonsdale Quay. It's outside of downtown Vancouver, but there was a food court downstairs, including a "farmers market". It's across the bay, and we enjoyed it. Got a great deal from Priceline.

@MrsMccarthy: When are you looking to go? Travelzoo always has great hotel deals. Did a quick search and found this one:

We've stayed at the Lonsdale Quay hotel, comfort inn and suites North Van and the Holiday Inn express at Metrotown. All are fairly well priced depending on when you go. You can have a look at those places on tripadvisor to see if they are any interest to you. We liked the Lonsdale and Comfort inn as they were close to the ferry, neither were anything super fancy but well priced. I was just looking about going next week and I noticed Lonsdale was only $78/night.
Holiday Inn's are always nice and clean with a decent breakfast. It's a good location right in metrotown so it is also close to the sky train and all that as well.
