Fun! How exciting! I half heartedly want chickens so we visit them at a local farm a few times a year but so far that is enough of a fix for me. You'll have to tell us all about your experience though!

Oh wow! We don't but all of my inlaws do. One of DH's aunt is really attached to her chickens. When she makes a meal out of them, she can't eat it, she tears up. The eggs are delicious, it has a golden yolk, you can totally taste the difference.

Nooooo - I'm soooo jealous! I want chickens so bad! I'm pretty sure we're too suburban to be allowed to have them, and DH hates chickens

@Kimberlybee: I think that's how I won DH over - he had a farm fresh egg over easy with toast So good!

So jealous! I know I don't have what it takes to take care of them, but I love the idea of fresh eggs.

I would totally have some, but I also don't think we're allowed to!

I would love to have chickens! They are not allowed where we currently live, though.

I don't, but my brother and his family raise them. I never realized how "pet-like" they could be! The kids love catching them and carrying them around.

@grizz: exciting! @mrs polish does!
@grizz: get this. We love farm fresh eggs. M? Does not. She went on a egg strike the whole time we were buying farm eggs. Once we switched back to Eggland's she got off her strike. weird child.

So jealous! We use to, and loved the eggs! We would let them free range and nature got them
Little chicks are soo much fun!
Here's my son and the chick he hatched, *gasp* 9 years ago

I'd love to get chickens, but I'm a total softie and know they would turn into pets and I'd end up like my mom, with an elderly, blind chicken living inside the house!!

@locavore_mama: LOL, really? So bizarre! Maybe it's because they're more flavorful? Aren't children's palates more sensitive than adult ones?

Chickens sound fun, but my guess is that they would sound more fun to my dog...until she caught them and turned any future yard we had into a feather pen. So no chickens for us, ever

Yay!!! We have chicken haha. We had chickenS but one of them died last month We got them as chicks a little over a year ago! They're pretty easy and DS is obsessed with them. Obsessed.

We're planning on getting chickens some day after we move to the new house. Exciting!

@LovelyPlum: don't know! I think she just doesn't like the taste because we cook with a lot of spices. She eats what we eat and I don't down the flavors for her.

We are the opposite. DH really wants them and I do not. I know which one of us would end up taking care of them!

I like the idea of fresh eggs. But I am terrified of birds.

Gah! SO jealous! My DH says absolutely not, but there's also a bylaw against it here

@locavore_mama: That's so funny! @Running Elley: @Beyond2: What kinds do you have? I'm looking at copper marans, ameraucanas, barred rocks, and orpingtons. I think we'll end up with a mix.

My family had chickens growing up! I loved it, they were like pets! I'd love to get chickens someday. The Orpingtons are good egg layers!

@grizz: we have five chickens: two barred rock, two copper Marans and one ameraucana. We started with two ameraucanas but one turned out to be a rooster! I looooove the eggs and can't eat store bought anymore. We get 3-5 eggs a day.

@grizz: How cool! I would love the fresh eggs, but we aren't allowed to keep chickens (or goats) here My dog LURVES chickens too, whenever we go on walks by my parents house she just loves to stare at the chickens in the coops. She started off being afraid of them until we introduced them, now she's obsessed!

@JessKas: That's an awesome amount of eggs! And you have my dream flock... Those are all my favs, and I think we want 5-6 as well

That's so exciting!!! I'm jealous I dream of having chickens some day

FUN!!! I love the idea! But I wouldn't be able to handle the noise. A week in Kauai with all the loose chickens and roosters was awful in the mornings! lol!

Sweet! I love me some chickens (and fresh eggs). Apparently, I had my own chicken at my grandparent's house in the Philippines. When I visited in the 3rd grade (ages ago) it was still there and mothered many generations of babies. That thing was fierce!!
papaya / 10570 posts
Oh crikey, no! Not for me!! I love the idea and even toyed with it a little when we bought this house (we have a huge garden) but then my friend started keeping chickens - she rehomes ex-battery hens - and the problems she has had with them health-wise is just insane! I know it's because of their history but it has totally put me off!
I'm excited for you, though! Post pictures please!!

@grizz: right now we have buff orpingtons and gold and silver laced wyandottes. They were slow layers for us but now they are very consistent. We've had rhode island reds, red sex links, barred rocks, leghorns and California whites in the past too. All were good layers. We've done meat birds too but that's a whole other topic lol. Good luck!!
