Warning, this might be morbid or emotional to some people.
When a family pet passes away, specifically a dog-what do you do with the remains? Would ever have them cremated and on your mantel?
I just figured everyone buried their pets.

I dont think its weird. I believe pets are family, people do that with loved ones, why not pets.

I really don't know. I think my parents had our old dog cremated, but the vet disposed of the ashes. I've never had to deal with it myself...

We absolutely would. I don't think it's weird at all (as much as I can't stand to think about it - our doggie will live forever!) I think it's a nice idea and I've even seen special urns for pet ashes at a pet store...aaaaand now I'm crying.

I think it depends on how your dog passes away? I heard if you have to put your dog down (here anyway) it costs a lot more money to get the body back than it does to have them cremated and given back to you that way. But if your dog dies naturally at home, you then have that choice to either bury him/her or take him/her in to have them cremated.
ETA: I was basically responding to this: "I just figured everyone buried their pets."

I really hope I don't offend anybody asking this. I have only had farm pets until now, and it is common to bury them in the pasture in a marked spot. And now we have a young dog (3 years old) so I have never even thought about this until I saw someone post it on FB.

I don't think its weird.....mainly because I regard my pets as TRUE family members.
That being said: I wouldn't cremate my family members either!!
I think I would bury a deceased pet (God forbid) in my yard or my parents' yard seeing as theirs is bigger and they are in their home for the long-run.

The only deceased pets I have had are fish, which I've buried.
If my dog/cat passed away, I would have them cremated and then I would spread the ashes in their favourite place - just like my plan for after I'm gone.

We will cremate our dog when the time comes (he isn't 3 yet!) but I don't think he will "go on the mantle" but be kept in a memory box, with something like his collar, leash, ribbons from agility, pictures, etc!
I grew up on a farm and so burying on property was the the norm, but our current home not being a lifer house, nor a big lot (don't think it'd be legal!) burying him isn't an option and pet cemetary is weird to me as property owner would have all the control on access/cost.
When my horse passed, he was cremated, but I did not keep his ashes, just a braid of his forelock.

We buried our dog in our yard (um, on the day we moved in. it was a looong day.)

@mrsmenow: I don't know if my DH is serious or joking but he mentioned to me about stuffing our dog if she were to pass. We would have our very own Rowdy. DH watches too many shows of 'Scrubs'. Haha!
I just don't know about that. Kinda creepy but I love my dog and would miss her squishy and cute face.
As for cremating and putting her on my mantle, I would consider that over stuffing.

@bluestriped bee: my husband wants a Rowdy too!
My family has always buried their pets. We have a little pet cemetery on my moms property.

We've always buried our pets at home when I was growing up. My parents have a little bit of land, and it's where we felt the pets would want to be. When our last family pet had to be put to sleep, they really wanted to have him cremated and brought home, but they were told that the place that does it waits until they have a few pets to be cremated, and they do them all together so then you would have mixed ashes. Not exactly what they had in mind...

@Leialou: Haha.
@mrsmenow: What about getting a small sculpture made (similar to a garden gnome) and putting your dogs ashes in there.
Then our dogs will always be in the yard and looking out for us. Aww, making me sad about losing my dog.

we haven't had to put any of our furbabies down yet, but when DH put his childhood dog down a few years back, they cremated him and had her ashes thrown on a pet farm a few miles north of where we live.

Our local humanitarian shelter cremates like 3 or more animals together so you get a mix of ashes. Not sure if everywhere does that or what but I guess it wouldn't feel that special to me. I love my pets dearly and don't want to think about them dying.

both our dogs were cremated and their remains are on my mom's dresser. we planned on scattering our first dog's ashes at the beach, but my mom was too sad and wasn't ready to let them go... that was over 15 years ago so i think they are just going to both stay with us in my parents house.

@anonysquire: my horse was done "as a group" and that's why I did not bother getting the ashes, I just didn't want him going to the other option for a deceased horse.
Typically you can pay extra to have them done individually, depends on the place of course!

Both of my cats I had cremated and i have their ashes in my house...i couldnt imagine not having them...

When I was a kid, my parents always buried our deceased animals in the backyard. We mostly had cats and one small dog though. With one of our dogs, they had him cremated by himself and we buried his ashes in the backyard. Right now I have my first dog and she's only 1, so I don't know what we'd do with her after she dies.

My family cremated our two dogs when they passed away and kept their ashes. I'll do the same with my own pets
Ugh, can't think about my pets dying...

We cremated our dogs. We have their ashes in a little wooden box. It was only like, $100ish?
