Have you watched that "Positive Parenting" seminar that is going around? It talks about keeping consequences relevant (basically what @sorrycharlie: is saying)....but I agree that's really difficult.

So it really depends on the behavior - if my 3 year old is playing with her food and not eating, I'll tell her she can't have dessert (and will give her sister dessert while she has to sit at the table). Or if she can't share a toy/throws a toy/snatches a toy after being reminded, I'll put that toy in time out.

Unfortunately those consequences are backfiring at the moment...she'll just march over to me with a toy she doesn't want to share and ask me to take it away, or tell me she doesn't want dessert anyway. SIGH

TIme out is almost always a successful consequence for us. I don't have to use it a lot, but when I do it is full removal to the bedroom and he can't come out until I get him. Anywhere from 5-10 minutes. He doesn't have toys in there but he can sit and read a book.
