did you go through the full-body scan at airport security while you were pregnant?
or can/did you opt out of it?

I did request a pat down instead of going through the scanner, but I've read that the amount of radiation you would get going through the scanner is significantly less than what you will receive just from riding on the plane. It's just a personal choice, I don't think there's anything out there that says that it's actually harmful.

I did not because - even though they say they are safe, like @kiddosc: said - I just didn't feel like there was enough research to *know*. Security was very nice each time I requested the pat down instead. When we traveled in Europe, interestingly, I was led to the pat down area every time before I had the chance to ask - even at museums, I was told *not* to go through the x-ray machine. I feel like my medical beliefs tend toward European anyway, so that really cemented my decision not to go through the machines.
ETA: I took 3 round-trip flights while pregnant, two domestically and one international.

I opted out and had a pat-down. I don't think there is much of a risk to going through the full-body scanners, but I wasn't in a hurry and there was an alternative so I went with that.

I flew 8 times during my first pregnancy. I did go through the scanners.

I opted for a pat down. I know some people find them super uncomfortable, but it didn't bother me at all.

The first time around I opted for a pat down. It was super awkward though and the baby took the opportunity to kick up a storm when she was over my stomach. I had to explain I was pregnant and it was the baby (not sure how she couldn't crack the code I was pregnant).
The second time they told me that the technology in the machines is less than in an ultrasound machine. I decided to go through and, of course, got flagged. I ended up getting patted down anyways. I just googled what I was told, though, and it appears to have a lot of controversy. One woman felt that she was being bullied into it (I could totally set that) by being told this.

I went through but maybe wish I just asked for a pat down. I flew three times while pregnant.

I never went through, I always asked for a pat down. It is usually not a big deal but if you are at a busy airport with a long line it does take longer.

@BakerBee: I was told the same thing but I kinda felt like the TSA person was just being lazy and didn't want to do a pat-down because it required more work. I just politely said I'd be more comfortable with a pat-down then it was fine.
pomelo / 5258 posts
I opt for the hand pat when pregnant or in the TWW or whenever I'm not in a hurry. TSA will redirect kids and obviously pregnant women when they see them. That alone makes me not want to go through them.
When I was pregnant I did so many other things to protect baby, why not avoid those machines too?

I refused and asked for a pat down instead. They let me go without one though.

I went through the scanners and didn't opt out. I was also the crazy person that ate everything on the "do not eat list". lol

Every time I've flown they automatically direct me towards the metal detector machine instead of the full-body scanner. I've always had excellent service while flying pregnant - everyone is so nice and accommodating!

I went through, it was no big deal. You get more radiation from talking on your cell phone than going through the scanner. And I hate having people touch my belly, let alone my whole body! I get that some people would still take the pat-down, zero risk as opposed to super duper minimal risk, but I just don't worry about the small stuff like that - although if I did, I think I'd be more concerned with the actual travelling/plane ride than the body scanner.

While I don't think the scanners pose a significant risk, I still asked for a pat down. They don't bother me and it was the choice I was more comfortable with when I was pregnant.

I flew early in my pregnancy and went through. I had asked a nurse about it and she said it was fine. For whatever reason, I felt embarrassed to ask for the pat down since I wasn't visibly pregnant.
I flew again early in 3rd tri and asked for the pat down. On my way there, they were happy to accommodate. On my way home, they tried to tell me that it was safe, blah, blah. I stood my ground and got the pat down but they made me feel crappy about it.
I wish there was more research into it.

I went through one of the older ones before I was showing. Every time I flew after that they didn't allow me to go through and did pat downs instead.

I opted out and did the pat down. It was no big deal. Anyone can opt out and request a pat down for any reason. They cannot refuse you. Through 4 flights there was only one tsa agent who sort of gave me a hard time, telling me it was fine and I should just go through, telling me it would take too long to wait for a female agent to come to do the pat down (it didn't) but almost immediately another agent came over and reprimanded the guy and told me anyone can opt out and you don't have to explain yourself.
pomegranate / 3791 posts
Awful to hear some of you have had them give you a hard time about it! Even though I didn't opt for the pat down, I would totally note the agent's name and file a complaint later, because that's totally inappropriate and goes against their training. Glad another agent reprimanded the one who was rude to you, @JerricaBenton:

I went through. I think there was something about the radiation being higher when youre in flight than in the scanners. Meh.
pomelo / 5220 posts
I went through traditional metal detector and opt out of the full body scanner. I too got the lecture/bullying/disapproving discussion about how it is safe but I stood my ground. It is my choice.

I've always opted out of those machines on principle, whether pregnant or not. Sometimes TSA does give me a hard time about it, but that's their problem, not mine.

I did both, but after the first pat down which I felt was really invasive, I just stuck with the walk-through detector. I only flew a couple of times.

I flew twice while pregnant. The first time was really early on and I just went through the scanner. The next time was late in my second trimester and the agent at my departure airport sent me through the metal detector, but the one when I was returning made me choose between the scanner and a pat-down. I went through the scanner. I'm pretty comfortable with the millimeter-wave scanners (with the yellow "gingerbread man" display you can see when you walk through) but would NOT have gone through a backscatter x-ray machine (those were the ones where the agent sat in a separate room to view the images, but they're discontinued now and I think all or most of them have been replaced).

I went through the metal detector thing on my way to and back from Mexico. I think both times it was the older type machines. I was 25 and 26 weeks. I'm not worried.

The agents directed me to lines without the scanner. I was planning to opt out if I had to make a choice.
Actually I generally ask to opt out unless we are overseas. Generally in other countries there is no option!
wonderful cherry / 21504 posts
Pat down. Only once did they give me a hard time and even then it was mild. I think I took nine flights total? Oh and the very first one, the tsa agent told me how she always know when ppl are pregnant and could just tell I was having a girl- at 8 weeks. Turns out she was right.
I asked my midwives about it and they said t was safe. Then I asked what the one who just had a baby did when se was pregnant and she said she opted for the pat down, even though she was sure it was safe.

@butterbean: I opted out. The HS person who wanded me and the person who gave me a light pat down told me they would have done the exact same thing.

The first time, I just puffed my stomach out as much as I could and rubbed it obnoxiously while waiting in line and TSA agent pulled me aside to go through the older type without me asking.
The second time, I was in an airport that only had the new scanners and I asked for a pat down. Frankly, I had to FIGHT to get one because the TSA agent was super obnoxious about it not being harmful, but I insisted and just said, "my doctor has advised me to request a pat down," which was not technically true but the guy would NOT listen to me. The pat down is definitely a veeeerrry personal pat down, just so you know in case you haven't had one before..
The third time . . . I just went through the scanner. I was hugely pregnant by then and didn't have the energy for a battle like I had the second time.

I had the same experience as @JerricaBenton:, most were totally fine with doing a pat down. One was a little huffy because it would hold things up until a female agent would get there (I could see her from where I was standing, so it didn't ale long at all), but he was corrected before she even got to me.
She, however, was a little "you know the scanner is easier" blah blah blah, and "this will be bit invasive and out here in the open." (Like @Mrs. Blue: said, they sure get up close and personal.) I told her I was pregnant and used to being felt up monthly by the doctor with an audience - that ended her little rant.

I never felt like the pat downs were invasive or embarrassing, though the protocol did seem to vary between agents - one was super thorough, even running her fingers through my hair but the rest were fairly relaxed-but they should ask you if you want to step into a more private area, and you can ask if they don't offer. It's not like you have to undress so I never felt the need, personally. Most of the agents I dealt with were very nice.

I flew 3 times while pregnant. They were not using the body scanners the times I flew, but I would have refused and gone through a regular metal detector/opted for a pat down.

I flew internationally a bunch during my first 20 weeks and went through the detectors. I don't remember if I went through full body or older type ones...
