I've had a half a glass of wine several times with dinner, with food, and I don't feel guilty about it. My doctor is firmly in the "moderation" camp, and so are both DH and I. I'm not going to go out and get drunk, but a small amount with food doesn't strike me as a huge deal.

I didn't drink while pregnant but I tell you what, there were some days when I really wanted to! I ate ice cream instead... I have friends who drink while pregnant, though - one glass a night. To each their own.

I drank before I knew I was pregnant both times. I didn't drink for the rest of my pregnancy..except for a sip of wine late in my 3rd trimester.

I didn't drink at all during my pregnancy. I'm not a drinker anyways, so it wasn't a big deal. I did drink my daily allotment of coffee from the 2nd tri on.

My OB/GYN also said everything in moderation. I've had a few sips here and there but nothing to amount to even half a glass of alcohol.

I have never had any alcohol during my pregnancies with my 3 LOs. But I am the type that would feel terrible if something ever went wrong and would question if the alcohol played into it so for me it isn't worth it.
cantaloupe / 6692 posts
I'm not a big drinker anyway so I completely abstained during pregnancy, but I have the philosophy that the occasional drink is probably fine.
pomelo / 5678 posts
Never ever ever. I don't breastfeeding either. Go me (sad face indicates I am very hardcore and not gonna say I don't miss caffeine which I also abstain from.)

I don't drink so it wasn't a problem to avoid alcohol during pregnancy. I did drink an occasional tea and coke during my pregnancy though.

I drank a glass of wine with dinner the odd time in the 3rd tri with #1.
I could go 9m+ without drinking while not preggo and that be totally normal.
But! If I want to have a glass of wine the odd time, I am definitely going to. I have had maybe 3 sips this pregnancy and will probably hold off to having a glass until 3rd tri again, but a glass at dinner I definitely don't see any harm in! I did while bf'ing too, after DD went to bed for the night I had one!
I don't know, I guess I am in the "we all turned out okay" camp.

Alcohol was the only thing my doctor told me not to drink/eat while I was pregnant. I'm *normally* not a big drinker, so I had no problem not drinking once I knew I was pregnant. but with both pregnancies, I drank when I didn't know I was pregnant.

I have one or two SMALL (like 1/4 glass) glasses of wine per week. I rarely finish them, due to acid reflux ... I didn't think I'd drink at all, but honestly, my midwives are fine with it, it's not like I NEED it, and I just love the wine in our region. With the small amount, it's likely entirely fine for the baby. I definitely didn't during the 1st trimester, and it wasn't until I was about 24 weeks that I considered having a little glass.

It's a huge no-no around here. During my first prenatal appointment, I even had to do a questionnaire about alcohol consumption. But other parts of Europe are a little more lax.

I had a few sips here and there when I was pregnant with LO. I tried to have a half a glass here and there during the third tri but I just couldn't bring myself to drink it, even though I wanted to. The guilt wasn't worth it. I think I will be a little more relaxed about it next time, but who knows.

i generally think that a glass or two of wine a week, particularly later in the pregnancy, is fine. i also read and felt very enlightened by the article that @MrsSCB: posted. an epidemiologist told my friend that basically it's easier for the health profession to take a hard line against alcohol rather than giving an inch to people who may take a mile.
that being said, i was very conservative with my drinking during pregnancy, just a few sips during the third trimester. the public health campaign really ingrained some fear into me!

I had a major aversion to alcohol when I was pregnant so I took it as an indication that I shouldn't drink.

I often have sips of my husbands beers...its getting so warm in Australia right now I can't help myself!! I'll sometimes have a sip of wine but I find that it makes me lightheaded so I'm mostly stopped doing it.
My sister drank a half glass of wine pretty regularly during her pregnancies and most nights while breastfeeding, and she's had two very smart very healthy kids! So I don't judge at all, even though I know that is anecdotal evidence. I think I will definitely not abstain while breastfeeding, if it agrees with me and my baby!

My motto is moderation after/during a meal, I'll usually have something twice a week or so. I was super sick in the first tri, so nothing more than a sip or two then, but otherwise I'm pretty relaxed about it.
Typically I'll pour half a glass or if I order it, drink half and give the rest to my husband. Frequently after 1/4 glass I'm in good shape and don't finish it.
That said, after a really crappy day yesterday, my half a Shock Top was probably one of the best beer experiences I've had in years- the stress I was carrying around before it was definitely not good for me or the baby.

Where I am, alcohol during pregnancy is a major no-no - there are signs all over the place! That being said, I had a sip of whatever DH was drinking occasionally, and when I went into early labour, my midwife actually recommended having a glass of wine to relax.
So, for the most part, I refrained.

I think I had a few glasses of wine between the time when we conceived and found out we were expecting. I abstained (save for a sip or two, a few times) until I was 41+5, and desperate for some relief. I took a bath and had half a glass of red wine. Still had to be induced the next day. Damn!

I don't like alcohol in general so it wasn't a question for me, but my midwife isn't necessarily against alcohol during pregnancy. Obviously excess isn't recommended, but she didn't advise against an occasional glass.

With DD I didn't have anything to drink. With this one I'm 25 weeks and have had a half glassof red. I'll probably have another half at Christmas... we'll see.

In this area it's all about moderation. Or at least that is my perception. I've never gotten dirty looks or anything.

Every doctor I've spoken with subscribes to the "Everything in moderation" idea. And I've done my research (in addition to the previously mentioned book "Expecting Better" - loved it!). I didn't drink during the 1st trimester, but I've had a few sips of wine in the 2nd trimester which were pretty fantastic and sated my desire. I wouldn't have a problem having a glass of wine every week or so, but I'd be sure to drink it slowly and with a meal. I wouldn't drink in a restaurant here because it is frowned upon publicly in my area (though I suspect a glass here and there is not unheard of in private).

I'm not a big drinker, so abstaining during pregnancy was no big deal. I think I would have felt major guilt if I had had any alcohol. I did indulge in small amounts of coffee and soft serve though.

I had literally one sip of wine after I knew was pregnant, but before I found out, I had several drinks on a weekend trip. My LO is perfect so thankfully those early drinks don't seem to have made any impact. I decided to play it safe thereafter.

Ha! I love this post. I currently live in a part of the world where alcohol is illegal so something we always look forward to when planning a trip is a good glass of red wine!
Hubs and I are very much in the anything in moderation camp and I 100% plan, and very much look forward, to having a small glass of red wine on Christmas Day when we are home visiting family.
Other than that it doesn't bother me in the slightest.

I'm not going to have any alcohol at the moment (I'm only 6wks) but later in the pregnancy? I haven't decided yet. Probably not though. I really don't need it, and haven't missed it very much so what's the point. Before I knew I was pregnant though, I totally had a few drinks. Ooops

My OB actually suggested I have a glass of wine here and there in my third tri, but I never did. I had absolutely no craving for it, and I had wicked acid reflux.
@Jennimac: I'm interested to see what happens in the trial too! And we just ate at Gusanos when we were driving through for Thanksgiving

Everything in moderation! I'll have a 1/2 glass of red wine about once a month, but I have caffeine almost every day.

@grizz: omg. Next time you are here or nearby, we will have a meet-up---if you want and that doesn't seem stalkerish or weirdish. If so, then I didn't suggest anything!

I never drank during pregnancy, in fact, it made me nauseous to even think about it.

my ob-gyn told me a little was okay, and she has been delivering babies for 3+ decades, so i believe her. i only had a few sips here and there after 1st trimester, but only at home where i couldn't get any dirty looks.
grapefruit / 4418 posts
I'm not a big drinker to begin with so it's not anything I really miss. I have had a tiny sip here and there when someone I'm with has gotten a super fancy drink. If it's just regular beer or wine, I usually go for a sniff of it and I'm good lol.

I have a glass of wine here or there. My OB advised me that 4 oz a week is perfectly fine (and encouraged it since I naturally have high blood pressure). I probably only have a glass a month, but I like that I don't have to worry about it.
Around here, a glass a week is widely accepted, so I don't get any strange looks or anything.

I am definitely in the minority, it seems, but I did a lot of research on it and didn't have a problem with a half drink to a drink while pregnant. (glass of wine or one beer.) I didn't do it in public after about 6 mos when it was obvious I was pregnant. I was a moderate drinker prior to having kids but would have no problem abstaining if my research had convinced me that I was harming the fetus.
