Did she come with a car or public transport. I know once, I had someone come for an interview and they arrived extremely early, but with the bus schedules they would be tight on time if they took the later bus. I told them, like you, that I couldn't take them earlier and that there was a coffee shop around the corner.

But i get you are annoyed. I was too. ha!

Yikes- that is early! I'm habitually 15-20 minutes early wherever I go, but that's a bit much. Maybe she is nervous and this is a way to make sure she's ready when it's finally her turn?? At least you know she'll be on time to work!:)

Lol, that is really early! I once had a guy show up an hour early, but more often I had to deal with people who were late.

@Mrs. Sunglasses: You do have a point about public transportation. I didn't think of that, especially if you're not in a city known for having great public transportation like NYC.

But she should still go somewhere else, like the Starbuck's, and then show up 15-20 minutes early if she's trying to show that she can be punctual.

The candidate is breaking an interview commandment . . . thou shalt not be too early (approx. 15 min. max) for an interview. She should have found a better spot to wait (or at least taken your suggestion re shops/coffee!) before announcing her arrival. I can appreciate the enthusiasm, but it also shows a lack of consideration for her prospective employer's time/schedule . . . or maybe a lack of experience.

Yeah, arriving early is far better than arriving late, but she should have waited somewhere outside of the building until the appropriate "early" time (15-20 mins) before she had them tell you she was there.

I've sat in my car for 20 minutes before an interview when it took less time to get there than I expected. No way would I have gone in the building 40 minutes early, let alone 90!

That is WAY too early. Even if you get there that early, I was always told don't go in till 20 mins early at the earliest.

I almost feel bad for her, she sounds really inexperienced. I agree though, she should be knitting at Starbucks or out in her car.

As an interviewee, you should be very careful not to do ANYTHING to inconvenience your interviewers. Arriving 1.5 hours early and insisting on sitting in the lobby is inconveniencing everyone since it's stressful to have someone clearly so displaced. Plus it just makes you look strange!

Even if she's qualified for the job, I personally would lean against hiring her just because this is such odd behavior. What if she did that to a client while representing your company??

Unless she's fresh out of college and doesn't know any better, I would be worried. If she doesn't get it that she's inconveniencing you, I would worry that she would get other things about the way the business works. My job involves needing to be influential and convincing to others - if a person doesn't understand the subtleties and nuances of a given corporate culture, they may struggle and not really understand why they're frustrating everyone around them.

I dunno, part of me feels badly for her but the other part is thinking WTF?

Umm that is odd. Especially the knitting! I once showed up 30 minutes early but sat in my car until about 10 min before my interview time. Let us know how the interview goes!

I understand her wanting to be there on time but once she found the building she should have waiting somewhere close by until atleast 10.30 before coming in for her 11am appointment. coming in at 9.30 is irritating and way too early

Yeah, it sounds like she drove there, so she should have just sat in her car and knitted there or gone somewhere nearby. The fact that she decided to sit in the lobby is just strange! It's great she wanted to be on time, but once she made it, she shouldn't have made an inconvenience of herself.

This is reminding me of when we were recently looking for a new employee at my office. I couldn't find one single resume that wasn't littered with spelling, grammar, and punctuation mistakes.

Sounds like some of you are HR people! I have 3 job interviews coming up any other no no's?!

@autumnlove: agree: red flag! she should've taken your suggestion and went to Starbucks to knit. openly engaging in extracurricular activities while waiting for an interview at a potential new job is beyond unprofessional.

@highwire: I always wonder if anyone applying has heard of Google, haha.. One applicant had a MySpace page, totally fine, but it was covered in pot leaves and said "bluntz, bluntz, bluntz" all over it... um, I'm gonna say no on that one.
