This series ran in our local paper, it's so amazing! Made me cry several times. It's three parts, this is the link to the first part and you can access the other two at the end.

I came to the long window of what I thought of as the Fat Baby Nursery. This was the place for healthy newborns — goliaths who wailed petty complaints with robust lungs. "What's your problem, fatty?" I said to one. No 9-pounder had any right to complain.
"What's your problem, fatty?" oh my gosh. too funny. This woman is a great writer, btw.

My little brother was born at 24 weeks gestation. They told my parents that they had lost him (while still in utero) and left them to grieve. As they were crying my stepmom felt the urge to push...so she did. She delivered her "stillborn" son without any doctors or nurses in the room. My dad looked at the baby, and thought he saw a little hand move. He was sure his eyes were tricking him. Then he saw a little foot move and went running and screaming for the doctors.
Jeremy was born weighing in at 1 lb 5.6 oz and measuring 11 inches long. He was in the NICU for 6 months.
He is now 16 years old.

After 100+ days, she started breastfeeding. And it worked. And continued. OMG.

My friend had twins at 22 or 23 weeks, they were 1.15 and 1.2 lbs now they are over a year old and doing great! It is amazing what the doctors can do now to help these babies survive.

Not done with the first part yet, but had to come back and post that this is wonderful. Glad others are crying through it and it's not just my postpartum hormones. I'd never considered all the ethical and moral decisions of micro preemies - hope those are choices I never have to make.

Ladies, I *know*!! Our radiologist actually told us about it yesterday (good thing she waited until I was well into the third trimester). That is actually the hospital where we're delivering. All the stories about all the wonderful people there, the doctors and nurses,... I just thought it was such an amazing story and had to share!
@rahlyrah: God, that is amazing.
@rachiecakes: Wow!
@mediagirl: I KNOW! "Kim, what the hell!?"

I'm just so glad that little Junebug is ok! Parts of that were hard to read and heart wrenching, but she sure is a fighter.

@littleveesmommy: The only reason I even read it is because our radiologist promised me she lives!

Scary, but an amazing miracle. This *almost* happened to my friend. She had the same complication, but she was able to keep the baby until 27 weeks in the end. Her baby was born the same day as mine. Modern medicine is absolutely amazing.

Such a beautifully written story, does anyone know if she has a blog?
admin / wonderful grape / 20724 posts
@LittleGBee: I don't think she has a blog... most of the writing I could find from her is from her journalism work at the Tampa Bay Times. But here's her Twitter though!
