@snowjewelz: that's what I did with my mom for a while, the downside is if she bought gifts for me on there I then got emails about them. Sharing the free shipping is totally worth the extra 20 bucks to me.

@yin: I'm not sure? It sounds like the way the hack explains is you turn off auto renew to charge your card. But the gift membership goes active the same day.
@snowjewelz: you can. That's what my brother & SIL do even though I set up a household account for them. It's a tad annoying though because I like to leave items in my cart and sometimes my brother will just delete my cart. Or sometimes I leave private items in there. I don't exactly want them seeing my search history! how much is the student membership any way? Do you get all the same benefits?

That's awesome, but you can't disable auto renewal. You can have it send you a notice when you are going to be renewed. I guess you can do that and then end membership before you have the next one start? I wonder if you talk to a rep you can have them honor it for you too, since you could always just end your subscription and buy it again.

@cascademom: yes!!! That's exactly the hack for existing members. Buy yourself a gift membership and schedule the email to shop when your membership expires. An actual gift membership is a great idea!

Not sure if this is helpful, but they had another promo earlier this year for a prime membership, which I somehow managed to hear about despite having a newborn and being in a sleepless haze! I purchased the membership as a "gift" for my husband, and set the gift to be emailed to him two days before our prime is set to renew. I set the "remind me before renewing" email to be sent to him so he remembers to cancel it, and also put a note on our calendar. I won't know until December whether or not it will work, but I'm hoping it will!

Even when I sign in under a different non prime account they won't let me purchase it as a gift. Even if I chose to buy it under the non prime account for myself they won't let me set a future date for the membership to start. Boo.
