There are some differences in the two. Amazon Prime offers Nickelodeon kids shows such as Team Umizoomi. Netflix does not. Netflix has Disney some of the older movies (nothing new yet) and the Disney Jr shows such as Jake an the NeverLand Pirates (but not Mickey Mouse Clubhouse). Amazon Prime does not offer them for free (but they are for purchase) You can purchase new seasons if you want to but it is at least a season behind as far as the free items.
For big ticket stuff, I find they are pretty much equivalent and prefer watching on Netflix. We stream through the PS3 so it may be different on a different device. For instance, Netflix will automatically play the next episode. In Prime you have pick each episode.
For newer seasons, we stick with Hulu Plus for the most part. So ultimately, we pay $8 for Hulu Plus and $8 for Netflix. But it works for us. We paid for Amazon Prime before the streaming because the 2 day shipping was important to us.

@brownie: that is great information, thank you! we are lucky in that a friend shares netflix with us, so we do have that - but I was trying to lobby DH to let me get prime (for me to ship, lol) but I have no great movie/tv selling points so far. sigh.
