Ever heard of these?
I hadn't until my phone started going off a couple hours ago and said "AMBER Alert" and a license plate number. Then my facebook was blown up with the same alert... found out its an alert system for missing children. And in less than three hours they found the missing baby and his abductor.
What I'm curious about is why/how did it get sent to my phone? I don't mind I guess but I never signed up for alerts. Are they automatically sent to all cells now?

unfortunatly we see them in the city from time to time 
i've seen them on tv news, internet news sites, buses, radio, and newspaper, but i've never heard of getting a text!
glad they were able to find the child so quickly!

@tysonja: the weird thing is it wasn't a text... it was an alert, like if I put something in my calendar or set an alarm. And my phone went off like it was ringing.. .weird right?? And if I'm on some type of "list" for it - why would this be my first one?
And yes! so happy they found him - he was only an 8 mos old baby!

Interesting... do you have an iphone? I got a blizzard warning alert on my iphone a couple weeks ago and it didn't come from my weather app or anything, just from the phone. I wonder if this is similar?

How great that they send them via text! I wouldn't think it's annoying at all, how amazing that they can spread the word so quickly no days. Hopefully this will save many lives!

Just talked to DH he said it's a new government thing where they send out AMBER alerts as of Jan. 30 if it's in your area.
@Shutterbug: yes I have an iPhone and yup, it was just like that.

I got one of these too not so long ago, but it didn't have any useful info at all. I had to google the alert, and finally found out it was issued on literally the other side of the state.

That's great that they do that now. I've only heard of amber alerts from watching those crime investigation shows. Glad they found the boy!

We get AMBER alerts here often as well. I haven't seen one on my phone yet, but I think that's great!

I am familiar with Amber alerts especially on highway signs, but I didn't know they sent the alerts to cell phones.

I've seen amber alerts on digital billboards along the freeway, but haven't gotten a cell alert. I did get a tornado watch warning on my phone a couple weeks ago though..
