I've heard good things about amber necklaces, but I'd be worried that my lo would stick it in her mouth, it would fall apart, and she'd swallow a bead. Does anyone have experience with amber necklaces for teething?

@artbee: I think that you and I are one in mind. Honestly, everytime I want to start a thread, you've already gone and done it. I've been thinking about amber necklaces for a few weeks now.

I was JUST thinking about these! A diaper site has them on sale, but got worried it would break. Still inerested in it, just worried.

I have one for my LO (6 months). I was worried too that she'd play with it, choke, etc... She doesn't even realize it's on her! It's not long enough for her to put up to her mouth. I take it off for naps and at night. I got one from Inspired by Finn on Babysteals and thought it was worth a try. Its been a few months, and while she still drools a lot, it's not that much that she needs bibs... Whether or not this is due to the necklace or her nature is hard to say though.

@Rubies: too funny! I guess it happens when our lo's are so close in age, we go through the same things. What have you heard about the necklaces? What are you doing to help with teething?
@pastemoo: the site I looked at had them for $20.
@msmamabear: the site I went to says they tie a knot between each bead so if it breaks all the beads won't fall off...but you still have the one bead that the baby could choke on if it breaks. Also, it said it's not meant for chewing, but I can't put something on my lo's neck and expect her not to put it in her mouth.

Oh... just looked around. Looks pretty cool!
I can't find any medical support for it, but I do like healing stones. I think I'd be happier with a big amber stone instead of a necklace. How often do you take them off? Are they a choking hazard?

I swear by our daughter's teething necklace. Its true that if you get the appropriate size she won't be able to get it in her mouth. With that being said, my daughters is too big and within the past 2-3 weeks she's been trying to chew on it. I just tuck it back in her shirt and distract her with something else. That seems to work for the time being. We also tell her "No chew please" so she gets used to hearing that she can't chew on it. We only take ours off for bathing and swimming. When she was younger we wrapped it around her ankle with a sock over it when she went to sleep. I know there's no medical evidence behind it but my daughter just got done breaking her 4 top teeth all at once over a 2 week time period and we only had one day where you could tell something was off with her. Previous to that we misplaced her original necklace and were waiting to find a deal to order another one and we spent a week with a runny nose, loose bm, and low grade fevers. The day our new one came in the mail we put it on her right away and by the next day we were no longer experiencing any of those symptoms..

I dunno, I am hard pressed to believe that the substance that relieves pain can really be absorbed through the skin in the amount necessary to relieve teething pain.
FWIW, they're really popular in Europe, you can find them at any baby store, pharmacy or supermarket.

You need to measure your LO's neck and select a length that is appropriate so they cannot get the necklace to their mouth. My son doesn't even care when he wears his. Make sure to take it off before every bath so the amber doesn't get wet. We didn't necessarily see a difference in my son's pain but I figure it can't hurt and if it helps even a little, it is worth it. Also, supposedly the lighter/cloudier the color, the more of the succinic acid is present so even though many boys have the darker amber, it has less pain relieving properties.

We have had a good experience with ours. At first I didn't notice much of a difference but if I forget to put it on for a day or two I definitely notice more drooling/fussiness/chewing on those days. We also got ours from inspired by Finn.

Interesting ... I'm thinking of trying one of these out with Baby Y when his top teeth start coming through!

Okay, I just bought one from Inspired By Finn. It was a bit pricey but I'm willing to give it a shot. Now that I know how fussy LO can be, I'm hoping I can detect a difference (or none at all) with the necklace.

I received my necklace just before the weekend and we started using it on the weekend (taking it off for baths/swimming, and sleeping). LO doesn't even realize it's on her so that's good. I'm anticipating a tooth in the coming month(s) so we'll see how this goes!

My LO is having a tough time teething and a co-worker recommended baltic amber and hazelwood and I'm curious about it.
Did it work for any of your LOs? Any updates would be greatly appreciated!

So what exactly are the perks of these necklaces? Do they do something fancy and magical that a frozen washcloth doesn't do?

If they come from a respectable place, they should have each individual bead knotted off from the next so that if the necklace does break they won't be able to swallow the whole string of beads. I don't have one for LO but know several people who swear by them. I have one for myself and wear it occasionally for headache relief (don't really see a difference but have read that it can take up to 3 weeks to really take affect).
